I see others have had the same problem I have been having for the last couple of weeks. I do not have commenting on my site although I do have a login on one part of the site. I belatedly removed the ‘register’ link from the login form but I was still getting requests for membership (this is moderated so I just removed them). It all started happening after I signed up for an NPR login for their community.

I just went back to the membership preferences and unchecked the ‘allow registrations’. I did not have captchas turned on anyhow. We will see what happens now.

It’s a problem that’s not likely to go away soon because bots get smarter and stupid people are willing to get paid to register the old fashioned way (manual).

It also comes and goes. I’ve had some EE sites get plastered with fake registrations for a month, then, after implementing a few tighter measures, registrations drop dramatically.

I am also having the same problem, maybe 5 illicit registrations per day even though I shut down the registration page !
