Best practices for contact form notifications?

I now have several EE sites out there, all of which use Freeform. For God-knows-what reasons, it seems that the contact emails will fail from time to time. I’ll get a few messages like this a year:

We haven’t gotten an email notification in a while but there are several new entries in the database. I just tried a test message and never received it. Help!

The circumstances are so varied that I can’t pin down a specific cause so I usually chalk it up to general email weirdness.

Is anyone else running into this issue and how do you handle it? Maybe I need to tell clients very specifically that they need to monitor the database and not rely on the notifications?

    Any advice is appreciated.

    I have the same issue.

Using Freeform in a 1.6.8 install the database will hold new entries but clients never receive any kind of notification of this.

Any insight would be most welcomed.

    Thanks.

Is it definitely a Freeform issue i.e. can you send mail successfully from the communicate tab?

I’ve had some issues with a certain host. Make sure there is a valid address in Admin › System Preferences › Email Configuration - Return email address.

I can speak only for myself but the address is my usual office emailaddress and works perfectly well by itself.
I have however not tried the communication module by itself yet. When I get back into the office tomorrow morning I will give it a try.

The one thing I did notice however is that the email that I give in the system email prefs is not being used by freeform.

    Thanks for your feedback!
    Much appreciated.

I have been having this problem for a long time now but Gareth’s solution worked for me.
