I’m thinking that the users of my site will probably only use the Profile section when they receive a message, so I was thinking that if I could pull the information out and display it in a link, then that would be more helpful.

I want to put it in a small submenu next to their login/logout… like:

My Profile | Messages (2 new) | Log Out.

Is there a somewhat simply way to achieve this or would this require a larger plugin development?

i assume you are doing this outside the forum? as if you look up this exact thing is done as above…
have a look and compare this template code and search the doc’s accordingly.
