I think the iPad will greatly improve my abilty to create great ExpressionEngine websites, improve my understanding of ExpressionEngine problem solving and allow me to work on websites where ever I am thus making my work more profitable.

That’s how I am going to put my case to her indoors - hope she doesn’t understand it too well and realise that the money spent could have had the house repainted.

Any help improving my ‘business case’ greatly accepted.

    Hmmmmm…

It’s my understanding that clients of web sites that use EE now require that an iPad be used in development, in addition to the latest iPhone version. Table stakes. Required tools. It’s the cost of doing business with demanding clients.

    😉

    That works for me.

I think there is a strong case for mobile versions of sites for clients in fields like Real estate, appraisers and sales people etc.

For instance a Realtor could carry an iPad and be able to show their clients other properties or work mortgage rates there on the spot.

If you can create an iPad version (templates) of EE sites for your clients you can easily created a need for it with them. Especially if its cool.

    People will always pay for:
    Saving Time
    Self esteem/image
    Convenience
    Scarcity

If you can cater to those needs I’m sure you will not have a problem finding a client to buy you an iPad to develop with.

Whatever the case you obviously aren’t someone who feels the same way as me on this so I’ll leave the discussion now I think.

I see myself as someone who likes to have a choice. Make it a plugin, I say, and if you don’t want to use it you don’t have to.

So, why no user facing video camera ...

Planned obsolence, of course. We’ll get that in version 2.0 I’m sure.

Does anyone think that AT&T or other cell phone networks have enough capacity to handle millions of customers using bandwidth intensive video chat on their smart phones? Not today, obviously. Maybe next year.

I’d settle for using these high-bandwith applications via the local WLAN.

... if history is a good guide, a few years from now we may see the wisdom in the light of a different day.

Or we may not. It’s not as though Apple never had any flops… Interesting times.

Does anyone remember Star Trek, the Next Generation? They had Pads which were flat touchscreen devices. The wandered around, reading notes, interacting with the ship and generally getting work done. Steve Jobs even used a Star Trek picture in his keynote. I see the iPad in this category, something you can walk around with, sit in bed with, and generally have around, a little window on your data.

Yes, tablet PCs have been around for a while but they lack the lovely Apple user interface. Yes, netbooks are portable, but they’re also fiddly and annoying for general use. Iphones/ipots are great but they’re small and you can’t see a whole webpage at once.

Ill probably buy one, i read and listen to quite a lot of various content and for taking notes this will be ideal.

A little concerned with no Flash or multitasking but will probably still buy.

Apple have a habit of releasing products with limited features and then releasing a much better one the following year, So i’ll stay on the sideline waiting for a better version or for the price to drop!

I’ll be buying one for sure! After spending 8 hours coding at work, then 2/3 hours on freelance work in the evening the last thing I want when crashed out in front of the TV to email and Facebook is access to the backend OS! I just want something fast and simple. So this will suit me down to the ground. Not sure why people are complaining about there being no OSX, why would they put such a large OS on something so small when they already have a OS built from the ground up specifically for small touch screen computers?!

I bought my parents a MacBook Pro last year and while they absolutely love it and use it everyday for shopping and emails when I occasionally use it they have done the most random stuff to it like increased the icon size to 500% or put Safari in the trash and because they have accidentally done this they never know how to undo it or even that they have done something ‘wrong’ in the first place. They don’t need access to the back end. They iPad will be perfect for them and I suspect perfect for 99% of other computer users that just wanna do Facebook and online shopping etc.

They have priced it perfectly as well, I just wish the UK prices reflected the USA’s!

Well using todays exchange rate if we bought it in the US it would cost £334 (not including US sales tax) but no way will it sell for that. We get everything in the UK at a mark up. MacWorld’s predicted a selling price of anything between £388 and £417 (fluctuations in exchange rate) based on past discrepancies between US and UK pricing on new Apple equipment. I can’t really see them selling it for less then £399 in the UK.

Remember it costs more to do business in the UK because you have to “move product around”

I’ve certainly got my eye on one.  Mainly from a travel perspective.  The main killer for me will be the availability of digital content unless that changes here in Aust.  Its ok if your from the US but have you ever tried to buy say an eBook in Aust?  As soon as you go to pay the available selection dwindles down to next to nothing by comparison.

Heck even iTunes does the same thing with the available content being minuscule compared to that available in the US iTunes.  Its frustrating when you know the content is legally available and easy to get if your from the UK or US but the only way to get your ‘hands’ on it if your from Aust is an illegal download.

That puts me out since I just don’t agree with the practice.  If they fix the content issue then I want one.
