What is the difference between the members module and the forum/members area?

    Hi all,

I am presently customising my EE installation to suit my site and have finally hit upon a snag I saw coming, but can find no answers to in the documentation or the forums.

What is the difference between the members core module and the forums module ‘members’ area. To me, they look the same and seem to provide the same functionality, but they have different templates and different access methods.

If they are the same, I’d like to ‘hide’ the forum one and stick to the members module, as it will be easier to theme the way I want to, plus I like the idea of Membership being ‘of the site’ rather than ‘of the forums’. But perhaps I would be excluding certain functionality by doing so?

I note that EE has done the opposite and all links go to the forum’s offerings. What is the rationale behind this?

Any guidance would be appreciated! Thanks.

Did you get any clues on that point ? I’m looking for answers to the very same questions right now.

    Thanks,
    L.

Maybe that question should be asked directly to Derek Allard.

Whatever you do, post the answer here.  Inquiring minds want to know.

They are both the same module but the forum member page is preferred because the template is easier to work with.

I’ll let someone with more knowledge answer the how part.

I agree Jose, that’s why I thought a forum discussion was the right way to do this - because then everyone learns from the response!

Thanks Super McFly. Let’s hope someone is forthcoming!

Well i have ended up using the main one, but just because it’s a shorter path and I have no other guidance!

The primary difference is the forum theme can be switched and the forums member templates will switch with it.  If you allow that then you may prefer to use those member templates.
