    Hi All,

There have been multiple instances where new clients stipulate that the site must “work on an iPhone” or some other mobile device.  I normally do test my sites on my own iPhone, just for the heck of it, and occasionally see minor differences between it and a desktop version of Safari, usually in the size of various text blocks.

As a result, I have recently started adding a caveat to my proposals that basically says I test in all major browsers but do not guarantee perfection on mobile devices, in cases where the client does not specifically ask for it, but figure it into my quote for those who do.

Would love to get some feedback on this issue - should I include it (meaning another style sheet and device detection, of course) or is it fair to charge extra for it?  And of course there is the Pandora’s Box of other mobile devices with web browsers to deal with as well.

Thanks for your thoughts and admonitions!

Our contracts state that we develop for the major desktop browsers only unless otherwise specified. This also includes the wonderful IE6 portion where we say we don’t make it look perfect, we just make sure the content is accessible. If their target will be using mobile devices more then we dig deeper and find out what devices are most likely to be used and go from there. Considering the recent (1-2 year) surge in “better” mobile browsers it’s getting easier to do this.

But to answer your question, we do what you seem to have recently added to your contracts.

Thanks, Erik, it is always good to know that I am not the only one!  BTW, I also include a similar statement to yours re: IE6 and below and refuse to do anything other than ensure content appears somewhere on the page!

Yeah, we get as specific as possibly to avoid scope creep! 😊
