I’m proud to announce the release of a new add-on especially for EE 2.0!

FireMail is an add-on that improves the way you send emails from your control panel. It is both an email manager and tracker in one.

Please see http://www.putyourlightson.net/projects/firemail for screenshots and more details.

    Feedback is welcomed…

Looks awesome.  Things like this are what I love about EE.  Will have to give it a go soon.

yeah it was great to be able to develop an add-on that really exemplifies the power of EE 2.0’s new developer features…

    Does this handle bouncebacks?

Minor question: can WYGWAM be substituted for the onboard WYSIWYG bar?

  • #6 / Jan 14, 2010 2:06pm

at the moment it doesn’t handle bounce backs but i’ll be looking into whether it is a feature that can be reasonably added as it requires adding email filters and other tasks that have to be done manually.

WYGWAM is currently not available for EE 2.0. it uses CKEditor whereas FireMail uses TinyMCE. if there is a reason to substitute TinyMCE with CKEditor then i will certainly consider it.

    UPDATE: FireMail now uses CKEditor

considering that i’ve had several queries about email templates, i’ve decided to switch the WYSIWYG editor to CKEditor (over TinyMCE). CKEditor has the ability to add templates, so now developers will be able to easily set up email templates for themselves and for their clients.

    enjoy!

can i just confirm that this is self tracking and does not use a third parties setup for sending / tracking?
i only ask because you use the phrase: campaign monitor when around these parts i have only seen it related to this company that many people seem to use:
    http://www.campaignmonitor.com/

And the monitoring screen is quite similar to say the least!

It does look nice and clean though - although personally i like to keep Email campaigns away from my main web server as these easily get blacklisted for mail lists!

  • #9 / Jan 15, 2010 12:34pm

yes, this is self tracking and does not rely on any other software whatsoever.

i can understand your confusion but my meaning was that it is an “email campaign monitor”.

i agree that for very large mailing lists (in the thousands) its probably safer to use a third-party for email campaigns but it really depends on your server and webhost’s limitations.

thanks for reply, and i will certainly try it out… but your right, highend sites with more dedicated VPS / Dedi box hosting won’t have the same issues as those on a super shared host!

Can EE Tags be used in the templates to bring in channel post data?

  • #12 / Jan 15, 2010 4:27pm

not at present. before the initial release i decided that if it was a commonly requested feature that i would add it. do you see it as being an important feature? personally i wouldn’t have thought of it as very useful, because in most cases you would want to format your website content to fit better in an email, so summaries of entries and rather than entire ones etc.

I’ve already set-up my posts to provide summaries; but I know what you mean. I suppose I’ll defer to the rest of the community to voice whether it would be useful for them. I would find it useful and it would save me a lot of time to be able to provide an automated list of the posts from the previous month along with summaries.

The ability to use EE’s templating system to design emails using dynamic EE content is a fantastic feature of Boomerang making email construction for clients a breeze. You can, for example, create an ‘Email’ channel. When you want to create a new email, you can have custom fields you can fill out in that entry. Then you can go into Boomerang and create a new email from an existing template that will automatically pull in the data an images from your Email channel entry and simply hit ‘send’.

You wouldn’t want to just use your website templates, but construct email specific templates using EE tags.
