    Hi all,

I have a pretty old PC. (1GB Ram, P4 2.66). Netbeans is good for me but runs very slow. I am using Fedora, Win 7 and I am writing my projects in PHP/Rails/HTML(CSS,JS).

If you are working with Netbeans smoothly, what is your hardware specification?

    Thanks

I guess, I can continue coding with my fast Microsoft Notepad.

I think adding a bit more ram should do the trick. Netbeans was running smoothly on my previous Quadcore with 4 GB of ram. It seems to eat a lot of ram which is why it might feel sluggish if you have 1 GB. Besides ram is cheap these days 😉

Every time I reopen Netbeans and there has been changes to the files externally (pulled changes) it likes to scan all of the files (possibly checking for classes/variables/methods?). It usually takes a little while. Recently I managed to get a solid state drive for my laptop and Netbeans is MUCH quicker. Small things like searching and the prompt you get when you press CTRL + Space happens almost instantly.

At work I use a G5 mac. I was working with a file that was around 1000 lines long. If you hit CTRL + Space it would take 5-10 seconds or so to load up the list.

I have a decently older computer loaded with Novell security crap at work. Has a Xeon Dual Core @ 3ghz with 3gigs of ram. Netbeans blows on this thing to. Anytime something pops up to help fill in extra code, I gotta wait 1-2 minutes for it to load and then get out of my way. Netbeans is just slow imo.

It’s my SSD drive. The other 500 gb drive doesn’t show up 😊

gigas10: if you’re working with lots of large files it can get real slow. Getting an SSD was the single biggest performance improvement for me. I’m sure n0xie would agree. There’s just soo quick and shiny!

I agree. I’m very content with my Intel X25-M.

I don’t agree with that Netbeans is just slow in general. Sure it sometimes can feel sluggish sometimes, but on my machine it’s blazingly fast. Auto-complete is instant. Loading a huge project takes less than a few seconds. Switching between projects is instant.

On my older Quadcore it sometimes felt a little sluggish, but never slow. Loading projects would take a few seconds while it indexed functions. Auto-complete would take a second instead of being instantaneous. (which I wouldn’t really notice since I usually start typing and just press CTRL+SPACE).

I also feel it kind of depends on your workflow. If you are used to Notepad++ and used to switching between files a lot, Netbeans might look like a snail to you. The only question is, does the IDE give you enough benefits to outweigh the slowness. To my company Netbeans did provide enough functionality to justify spending a bit of money on high end systems. After all, All programmers should have a fast PC.

    Hi,
According to me,you should go with the new updated version of your operating system. And also updated your RAM for faster performance.
