I have a site where I have upload directories with image upload preferences (Weblog Administration -> File Upload Preferences -> [upload area name]) set so that the maximum image width is 550. the maximum height and file size are blank.

i have the live site and a staging server that’s a fairly identical copy of the live site. just yesterday I duped the live database and imported on the staging server. and i checked manually to see that all related settings for the upload preferences are identical.

somehow the maximum width setting is ignored on the live site and people are uploading images that are too big. however, on the staging server those same images are rejected.

    suggestions?

Which version/build of ExpressionEngine are you using? You can find that out at the bottom of any control panel page.

The current version is 1.6.8 and the build is 20091002.

Both are 1.6.7 Build 20090211. And right now updating is not an option although I don’t see how that’s really an issue since both servers are identical. But if it is, it is, and at least we’re aware of it.

Probably not the issue, we usually recommend running the most recent version.

How are you getting the file uploads? Are you using any extensions?

Understood. I think they want to save update/upgrade time for when it’s time to go to 2.0 but i’m uncertain there.

We are using the standard, out-of-the-box way of uploading images for use inside weblog entries - the ‘Upload File’ button included in the control panel. The dev server is running on a mac mini while the live server is at enginehosting.com (fwiw).

This may seem trivial, but do you have multiple “File Upload” areas set up, with different preferences? Can you verify that the images are being uploaded in the correct in the correct File Upload area, with the width restrictions.

Has anything changed on the live server, besides file paths (Extensions, etc.)?

We have many file upload areas. The site is for teams and each team has its own. I can confirm that when I upload to a specific team area the file does go where expected and that upload directory has the 550 px width limit set. Every single file upload area has the 550 px width limit set.

Everything that can be the same on the two servers is, to the best of my knowledge. I copied everything yesterday including checking to make sure all add-ons where in both locations.

    Chad,

Can you confirm the Maximum Image Width value on your live site?

The reason I ask is that a value of ‘500px’ will not work but a value of ‘500’ minus the px will

Not to hijack the thread but I am having the exact same issue. Running the most recent build of 1.6.8 with max image values of “3000”.

rmdekek, so you’re saying that uploads with more that 3000 pixels width wise are being uploaded?

    That’s correct.

    @rmedek
Are you running any extensions? And what version/build are you running?

I’m running the most recent build of 1.6.8. I have extensions but I’ve disabled them to test and still get the issue. I can’t do too much more debugging because the site is live now; it’s not a critical issue for me but I wanted to jump in to say that Chad is not the only one w/ issues.

    rmedek,

Whereas I am 99% sure Chad’s issue was down to him adding ‘px’ in his Maximum Image Width field I cannot say for sure with yourself. Can you FTP up the original image somewhere so one of us can try and replicate your issue?

I’m sorry, I don’t have the image that caused the original issue. The image that broke the site was a landscape image over 3000px in height (I have 3000 set as height and width maxes)—PHP ran out of memory to resize the image, so I got a call from the client saying he got error messages. I deleted the problem image, uploaded a smaller version, then tested the upload limits with a large personal photo.

It’s not a critical issue (to be honest I’m sort of swamped at the moment and don’t have time to debug anything) but I checked the forums and saw someone else was having an issue so I thought it was worth mentioning. If it happens again or I get some free time I’ll post back.
