Slow Control Panel when saving first time in session

When saving a post or updating a template for the first time after logging into the CP it will take up to one minute to finish loading the page. After that initial action the performance of the CP becomes normal and saving other pages and templates only takes 1 or 2 seconds.

What could cause this? Has anyone else experienced this? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to the ExpressionEngine forums, eeart.

Which version/build of ExpressionEngine are you using? You can find that out at the bottom of any control panel page.

The current version is 1.6.8 and the build is 2009102.

Hmmm… can you tell us more about your server? Who are you hosting with? Windows or Linux?

    eeart,

Who is your host and have you used their services before for any sort of dynamic site?

Do you have any extensions running?

How is the speed on the front end of your site?

Is this new behaviour or did it recently start happening?

Thanks for your help so far, Sue & John.

Our host is YourHosting.nl in the Netherlands. We haven’t used them before for any other dynamic sites. It wasn’t always like this, though. The slow saving of templates/posts started about 6 months ago, but we aren’t sure what caused it.

The speed of the front end is okay. It could be faster, but it’s nowhere near as slow as when you save a post or template for the first time. That takes about a minute. Then when you save it again or go on to do something else things are okay again.

Are there a lot of extra things that EE needs to do the first time you do something in CP? Is it common that it is slower at the beginning of your session?

We’re using the Multiple Sites Manager (with two sites), Discussion Forum Module (only installed, not in use yet) and these other modules are installed: Akismet, Blacklist/Whitelist, Blogger API, Comment, Email, Emoticon, Freeform, Photo Gallery, IP to Nation, Keyword, LG Polls, Mailing List, Member, Metaweblog API, Moblog, Pages, Query, Referrer, RSS, Search, Simple Commerce, Statistics, Tag, Trackback, Updated Sites, User, Weblog, Wiki

Can you clear your cache manually via FTP by navigating into system/cache and deleting everything in there including folders but just leave index.html

I emptied the cache folder and now saving a template is quite fast again. So do you think it is the cached files that is causing CP to be slow? Just last week I updated EE to 1.6.8 and also deleted the cache folder. I didn’t test the speed of CP right afterwards, but for sure it was slow about a day later. Should the cache folder be emptied regularly?

We have the following extensions installed:

    LG Twitter v.2.0.1 (disabled)
jQuery for the Control Panel v.1.1.1 (disabled)
    User v.2.0.7 (enabled)
    Akismet Check v.1.1 (enabled)
    LG Polls: Controller v.1.0.6 (enabled)
LG Polls: Poll Question v.1.0.6 (enabled)
    Tag Submit v.2.1.2 (enabled)

Cache files should be deleted automagically, but it won’t hurt to have a cron job that deletes them at a scheduled time.

Are you still considering going to EngineHosting?

I don’t think clearing the cache solved the problem. This morning the first time I saved a template it took about a minute to load again. Then I closed my browser windows and tried it again and it was faster (less than a second). Could it be that the first thing you do in CP after some time of inactivity it has to do something in the background that takes time?

I think you may have confused me with someone else? I never heard of EngineHosting.  😉

Are you using any caching? Can you make sure the cache directory has appropriate permissions? The behavior your are describing almost sounds as though PHP tries to write to the cache, then fails or times out.

Check permissions, and try to disable caching.
