All the sites that I’ve found which do comparisons of CMS’s say that ExpressionEngine does not allow load balancing, that is, it does not allow you to put a load balancer in front of it to split the load between multiple servers requiring user sessions to be passed between all nodes transparently.  Is that true?

How does one handle load balancing with ExpressionEngine?

    Thanks for your time.

Hi, fwcweb - welcome to the forums!

EngineHosting runs fully load balanced solutions very successfully with many ExpressionEngine sites.  I’d recommend searching for “load balanc” (leave off the e, you’ll get balancing and balanced) and reading the posts by Nevin Lyne.

As long as the load balancing is invisible to the application then you should be just fine. =)

Load balancing is certainly possible, if done correctly: EngineHosting does it with great success. When done transparently the web application does not even know that it’s dealing with a balanced setup.

Yes, in digging through the forums I’ve seen this suggestion before, but doing a search on “load balanc” returns so many results and many of them don’t provide the information I’m seeking, which is how to set up a load balanced solution with ExpressionEngine.

It will certainly require a certain advanced familiarity with server administration in general, and PHP/MySQL in particular. See these threads for for a bit of additional information. Obviously this is too complex an issue to expect a detailed rundown here in the forum.

Ah, Thank-you! I’ve searched all over this forum and hadn’t discovered that particular thread, which is exactly what I needed. 😉
