I am building a website for a racing circuit. When the racers are registering to become members, they will be allowed to choose their preferred racing number. What is the best way to allow them to select a number but also have expression engine check to see if that number has been taken and then return a message to “choose another number”

They need to be allowed to choose their own number instead of being given one.

Also, but not required, it would be nice to display numbers that have been taken or vice versa, numbers that are available.

    The numbers range from 1 - 999

Is this possible with a custom field in the members section?

    Thanks for your help

This is scripting land - you’ll need to use PHP to do this, and maybe Javascript as well, it depends on whether you’ll allow the page to reload or if you want it done in the background. You can allow PHP in specific EE templates through the CP, and stick it in there, or else stick the PHP in its own .php file somewhere on your server, within webroot.
