I installed (and purchased) ExpressionEngine for my nonprofit employer. One of the key drivers for this purchase was what I had hoped to be the ability to post on our blog, with the Moblog module, via my iPhone. However, every time I attempt to Check Moblog, I get the error “Unable to connect to email server”.

This is hugely frustrating and not user-friendly, as the settings in the Moblog Module couldn’t be much simpler, at face value, and if we knew this function didn’t work, we’d second-guess our purchase.

I’ve searched the forums without finding much help. Some say mod.modblog.php needs to be modified (tried to no avail), some say Modblog simply doesn’t support email clients with SSL certificates, some say to use an email address with the same domain as the EE-powered blog (this doesn’t work for us). Our Gmail is POP-enabled.

Is ExpressionEngine planning to make it easier for Gmail users to use the Moblog? I imagine a decent number of people are interested in this, judging by forum posts.

Is it even possible to use the Moblog function with an email client using SSL?

How can we set up Gmail to work with Moblog?

That is definitely possible. May I ask what version and build of EE you are using?

However, every time I attempt to Check Moblog, I get the error “Unable to connect to email server”.

Not sure what you mean, exactly, by “attempting to check the Moblog”? All you do, really, is to send an email to a specific address that, in turn, is checked by EE. You can send this mail via a desktop mail client, your iphone or whatever.

Is that what you are doing? I suppose you can send mail from your iphone to other addresses just fine? Does the article you send via mail eventually show up on the site?

Is ExpressionEngine planning to make it easier for Gmail users to use the Moblog?

There is nothing inherently difficult about it; I’ve posted many moblog entries via gmail.

Is it even possible to use the Moblog function with an email client using SSL?

There seems to be a little confusion here: In your moblog preferences’ “Email Settings” you specify the account settings of the POP account you want to check. It does not matter which mail address you use here, EE just needs to be able to check it with POP3.

It is recommended to use something like .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) here, although the choice is yours. This should be a dedicated address: everything that is posted here, by whatever means, will potentially end up on your site. Using Gmail here is not possible, because Gmail does not allow regular POP connections, it forces the use of SSL which EE does not currently support.

Is that the issue you are running into? Why would you want to use Gmail for your incoming moblog address?
