I think you misunderstood slightly. The point of having the website is to build something i’m proud of, not something that makes a lot of money. Sure it’s awesome to have a website that supplements your income, but I would be happy if it becomes popular and i’m not making any money.

Plus it’s always a good place to try out what works and what doesn’t so I can put this into my future projects.

If you read my topic again, you’ll see what i mean.

Also on the website i’ve done things that i’ll purposely get less clicks and therefore less money. One of the big things to do is make the advertisments differ from the content. If you look at the advertisments on my website (right column and bottom) you’ll notice they style in with the website, obviously it looks much nicer but you get a lower CTR.

Also if you register an account and login the ads don’t actually display any more. So yeah, once again. Just want to start building up the website through more visitors, not just trying to make money from it!

Not really trying to offend you here but the design could have a lot to be desired. For a humour site the design is quite gloomy and dark. There isn’t any real colour to it. Jokes are meant to be light hearted and fun, but the site design doesn’t portray that.

That is true i suppose. I was trying to make it more light hearted by using stripes and big fonts etc…

I recommend submitting your site to professional directories websites. Write a short description, make sure your website is not trying to sell things and all. Just google web directories there are plenty of them.

You should submit your rss feed to as many directories as possible + ping often.
You must size up the competition and get anchor text back links back to you domain from high PR domains.

Cheers, thanks for your suggestion. Running through a few now.

What about integrating other login systems FConnect GFriend Connect OpenID. Personally I hate creating accounts everywhere and after that forgetting that I have one 😊 If I could sign in with one of these most spread logins i wouldn’t mind because it’s just 2 or three clicks.

Someone mentioned the site looking gloomy. I agree. Also, the blank avatars bother me.

For SEO purposes you needn’t use ‘humorous’ in every question - most people don’t search for humor or humorous I wouldn’t think, but would likely more likely be looking for funny, joke, comedy, etc. That just helps people find your site when that is what they are looking for.

Personally, I use twitter for most of my comedy now - there are some very funny folks, so daily I can open my twitter and get all the laughs I care for.

Also, it isn’t immediately clear to me by looking at the site that this is an open participation welcome type thing. I read, I scroll, I move on - it doesn’t scream “you’ve got something funnier, say something!” And the lack of comments further remove the chance to participate.

The blank avatars are annoying and make the site look dull and boring and lifeless. Either remove them entirely or have it so a person gets some icon, even if randomly assigned on signup, and has a list of icons to pick from if they don’t want to load in their own. Would add color and some personality to the site.

The idea of using openID would be cool too, just because I wouldn’t mind posting something funny and quick with my twitter account or facebook, but people who have something funny to say are usually also very lazy. Comics are, by nature, unmotivated and tend towards sedentary. Anything extra they need to do to participate will drive them off in droves.

With comments, perhaps some tagging fun sort of rating system (silly, LOL, LMAO, ROFL, ROFLMAO, ROFLMGDAO, ROFLMGDAOUCCHSYCDOL (roflmgdao…until the cows come home and steal your car and drive off laughing)), and things like that you’d have a reason to email people updates. “Sheila says you are hilarious, ten people think you are thtoopid - prove them wrong!”, that kind of thing - to get contributors to come back and participate more.

Also, the thing every funny person enjoys about comedy is making people laugh. If all you get is a silent little posting of your joke with no response other than perhaps +1, there is no reason to bother - what’s in it for the funny person?
