An add-on developer is claiming that in reference to my using the default Guest Member Group…

“It’s very unusual the Guests member group would ever be used to actually have members be a part of. It’s possible EE and other extensions will cause you grief using this method.”

Maybe I just don’t know any better, but it didn’t seem that odd to me. They are suggesting that I create a new member group and reassign all members of that group to a new group to avoid this “grief”.

So I wondered what everyone else is doing.

They are correct -the “guest” group is any non-logged in user.  The guest group is a special group and you should use another group to house member that have any particular permissions.

When you say “logged in” do you mean the control panel? Wouldn’t someone have to log in to be in any group?

I don’t allow them in the CP but let Guests comment and submit info using an SAEF. Is that so wrong? 😊

No, I mean logged in anywhere, front or back-end.

Uh, allowing the guest group to post will not normally work, that’s a special group.  You should be using a different group for that.

Hmmm. If you could point me to the info about that in the documentation, I’d appreciate it. Can’t seem to locate that myself.

Is it possible to use the SAEF with the Guest group? I need a system where users can reserve dates through the calendar. Basically, I want them to be able to click on a date that has no entries and create an entry which will set the status for that date.

No, it’s not. As have been said, the “Guest” group lumps together any non-logged in users. To use the SAEF you need to be logged in, though. For workarounds, search the forum (“logmein”) or start a new thread in Howto.
