my C-Ignited website is a photgraphy site so I’d need fast response times and no bandwidth problems…

I’m just on the Tiny package at the moment, the only live domain I have running there is my blog. But, they make it really easy to flex up/down as needed.

STAY AWAY from A Small Orange.

I have been with them for about two years now.  Servers have been ok.

But they stepped in some big doo-doo last night (JULY 8, 2009).

ASO SERVERS (plural) were hacked. All of my sites were serving malware for several hours.  Not just my sites but hundreds of other ASO sites. This is something I can not overlook and can no longer continue to host my sites there.

    Forum link to latest info:
    http://forums.asmallorange.com/index.php?showtopic=12905

    Info about what happened:
As many of you are aware, a large number of our systems were compromised this past evening. We tracked the attack down to an employee who was working from home. Apparently his PC was infected with a virus of some kind, at which time his password was stolen.

We are planning on implementing some additional security measures in the next few days to keep this from occuring again in the future.

The malware pages should be gone, but so are a lot of files. We’re restoring files now and should have things back up and running over the course of the night. It was the same employee’s account that was compromised, so his access is temporarily revoked.

SO PLEASE KEEP THE SUGGESTIONS COMING.  I tried out enginehosting but found them a bit too restricting (number domains, number email addresseses, etc) and no cpanel (need to email them when you need a new db).

I’m curious if those who recommended ASO in the posts above still stand behind them.

Hello I think that those people suggesting ASO did it with confiance, unfortunately, every hosting provider has its own problems (servage.net has been hacked as well in the past) thanks for the link, I’ll have a look.

Yes I am keeping the thread alive 😊

everity.com for the win! Best support I have ever recieved and if you need something extra just ask.  IE: I needed SSH access I ask for it in a support ticket and in about 10 min’s it was up and running (in the middle of the night).  I once needed more FTP accounts, asked and I had 20 extra in about 3 min.  Best part, I didn’t have to pay an extra dime.  Also they are really inexpensive!

But A Small Orange is good as well!

I’ve been on Dreamhost for a few years now, I’ve only had two outages. Not exactly typical of the total Dreamhost “experience” but no complaints.

i’ve had just about every problem under the sun with hosting companies over the years (hawkhost, aso, mediatemple, vpslink, etc..).. been through about 6 of them in the last 3 years in fact… i keep going back to linode.com though, you can’t beat their prices for a unmanaged vps. That and their tech support has always been superb. I currently have two of their smaller vps node accounts, one on each side of the coast (the newark datacenter is the best for reaching europe btw).

stay far far far away from a small orange.. nothing but problems!

I have a Slicehost VPS. It’s probably the best inexpensive hosting option (so long as you can setup your own linux server). $20 USD a month gets you 10GB of hard drive space, 100GB bandwidth in and out and 256MB ram (enough to setup a decent LAMP or rails server).

It’s the best host I’ve ever had, never had downtime and you can do anything you want with the box. Very quick too. I’ve got 4-5 low traffic websites hosted on there at the moment, if it ever gets too slow or you run out of space they do really huge packages for more money.

I have been recently doing a project for a customer who researched and got an account at bluehost.com.  I run my own dedicated web server - so I was a bit skeptical at first.  I follow the cpanel/whm forums pretty closely and am active in managing my server.  I was surprised to walk through the control panel of my customer’s account.  It was much more advanced and up to date than my own server.

$6.95 a month and they claim unlimited disk space/bandwidth.  We all know that when anyone says unlimited, we have to cringe a little bit, but then I started researching these guys and found that they are in the top 10 of many of the comparative web hosting sites.

To be honest, I called them up and asked if they offered dedicated servers….but they don’t.

I recently signed up for an account with BlueHost, and must say they’re awesome so far 😊
I’m also impressed how quick their support is to respond. I signed up on a saturday, so you might expect responses to be a bit slower, but I had my tickets (have to ask for SSH access instead of being enable by default) and it was resolved within 15 minutes.
I also asked about the unlimited bandwidth/disk and there’s no fair usage policy as such, but they will give you some warnings if your excessive usage negatively affects other users on your box (which is fair enough)

Oh, and I’m only paying $3.95/month and got a free .com domain thrown in 😊 Found a review with a click through link for the lower price (I’ll try dig out the link if anyone wants)

Currently use webhosting.uk.com.  Run a basic VPS for about £19 a month (£15 if you don’t need cpanel etc).

have only had one problem and that was when they upgraded the server without telling me. IP changed so I just needed to update a glue record. Support is both via ticket and live chat.

If you’re interested, server specs are 8 core Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5420 @ 2.50GHz, 384MB base memory , burstable to 512MB, 10GB of disk of which between 5&6 is OS.

Speed & network -  never had a problem.  Ping from home is 14ms, ping from the office 4ms.

An example of a heavy PHP app running is http://diff.calax.co.uk/prestashop (and no, it’s not a real shop so please don’t try and buy anything 😊 )

I have to say - DreamHost isn’t *that* bad. I signed up mainly because it gives you masses of space and bandwidth, and is ‘green’. I immediately realised I’d got on a bad cluster - but that is now all fixed, and they found the source of the problem (it was some network hardware) and they’ve blacklisted the company which makes that hardware, so it shouldnt happen again.

It did get me MEGA annoyed at the time, but it’s been pretty steady for the last year or so. I’m now getting this ultra-annoying problem specifically with CodeIgniter (php5.cgi hangs and stops anything much from happening for about half an hour), so I’m having a shop around for a good dedicated server solution. Moving will be a pig though, as I have a multitude of domains and databases for the 15 or site testing sites and stuff which I run, along with a couple of customers’ sites, so I’m putting it off for as long as possible 😊
