I do have to wonder what you think your time is worth and how much time have you spent un-installing Vista, installing OSX, uninstalling OSX and installing XP.

You obviously don’t install OS’s very often and if you do, you must be doing it on some ancient hardware.

Vista uninstall -> delete partition (only takes a second, gonna have to have a new partition for OSX anyway)
OSX uninstall -> delete partition (same, in reverse)
XP install -> once it gets out of the DOS looking part of setup where its copying the files to the hard drive and get to the actual setup, I can be at a desktop running in like 10 minutes. Have everything set back up just like I want it in less than an hour.

Granted, that takes time, but.. it’s not like stuff like that is done on a daily basis. The only way “uninstalling” an OS should take a while is if your worried about security and are wanting to do a DoD drive wipe. I wouldnt worry about something like that unless it was a computer I was getting rid of.

OSx did take a while to install and to get it working correctly, but I did have another pc next to me which I was using at the same time, working ad reading on how to install OSx, XP was a doddle, and in writing this the first post it was installing.

I just had to install Windows to do some development in Flex(was having issues with the beta eclipse plugin).  Anyways - My office is really quiet and one of the first things I noticed w/ Vista is I don’t think I’ve ever heard my computer work so freaking hard.  It got ridiculous to the point I had to play some music to drown it out.  I know this doesn’t really indicate anything - but just made me wonder a little wtf was requiring my computer to work like that.

I’ve run ubuntu with vm centos for my local dev environment and have for about the past 3 years.  I’ve never had an issue with linux other than the usual trivial things in windows sometimes took a bit to get running in linux.  My work provides me w/ a macbook and after about 2 months being on site and being required to use it I really don’t like it much.  My nix desktop does everything mac does + more.  I use my macbook for iChat and that’s about it.  Yeah, it’s not in the pretty osX case with a nice little apple on it, but it beats the hell out of all but the highest end macs.  Downside is dealing with Adobe products.  People say oh, use gimp it’s basically the same.  No - it’s not even close.  So I’ve got a vm with osX running.  It’s a little cumbersome working back and forth between the two, but I’ve recently switch to where I have my graphics crap in a repo and move things around that way.

I can recommend Windows 7 (also the 64bit).  If you install an RC you can use it to late next summer, I think.

I have only tried it with different Windows versions, but I think you should go for multiboot.  Rearrange your HD (with a Linux live-cd for example) so you can install W7 to a new partition.

Windows 7 looks good, but the auto-shutdowns start this summer / autumn. even though windows would run for another year almost it would shutdown every 2hours which would get extremely annoying.

I’m sure there would be some sort of hack or ‘work around’ for that lol

Not correct, its March 1, 2010

    http://www.geek.com/articles/news/windows-7-rc-to-auto-shutdown-every-2-hours-from-march-2009058/:

For the RC, bi-hourly shutdowns will begin on March 1st, 2010. You will be alerted to install a released version of Windows and your PC will shut down automatically every 2 hours. On June 1st, 2010 if you are still on the Windows 7 RC your license for the Windows 7 RC will expire and the non-genuine experience is triggered where your wallpaper is removed and “This copy of Windows is not genuine” will be displayed in the lower right corner above the taskbar.

    I’m Loving Windows 7.

Not to fan the flames of os wars ... but ...

I’ll be honest ... i’ve been wanting a mac simply because i’m bored with XP ... which truthfully is an excellent OS and has been stable and incredibly productive for me. mac commercials are so deceitful in this regard. i never have malware issues, not that others don’t.

But I installed Win 7 beta as soon as it was out ... I was very impressed. I got the RC1 just recently and decided to make it my primary OS. It’s freaking awesome, stable, and jsut enough cool factor w/o being showy.

Personally ... I’ve never understood getting a mac for any other reason other than style because the productivity bragging is BS.

With a pc you get more for your money, you can’t even argue that. why pay more less hardware, especially when win 7 is so good.

I expect Win 7 to put a serious dent in Mac adoption rate.

After my years of VAIOs I decided to take the plunge to Mac….and I am glad I finally did.  The only complaint I have is I wish Apple would create a small netbook as it would be great to have a smaller take anywhere OSX computer that doesn’t cost in the thousand dollar price range.  Since Apple won’t make me one, I guess I will have to start looking into making one myself.

Hmmm ... who’s workign for Apple here? 2 posts, you guys a regulars I see. lol

After my years of VAIOs I decided to…

I haven’t tried a VAIO recently but I always remember them as being all about the SONY logo and less about being a machine that justifies the $.

I’ve always built my own machines, so that right there says ‘not the average user’ but you can buy a sweet Dell XPS for short $ and with Windows 7 ... that will be a kick ass setup.

Not that a PC is better than a MAC or vice versa ... I believe Win 7 is going to have a positive public reaction. The early users/testers are all giving it a big thumbs up.

Watch Apple get more pushy in their negative ads.

But will they bash on Vista or Windows 7? That is the question. 😊

I had the same issue with my Mac which is a Compaq V3870TU which had an intel 3945ABG wireless adapter. The simplest thing to do was to change the adapter to Broadcom which has Wifi Drivers for Leopard OSX 10.5.2 which is a Kalyway build. I hope this helps you. Try to find a compatible Wifi for your laptop that has Leopard Drivers. The other better thing is to use the USB Wifi which 100% supports MacOS Leopard.

Nope, never worked for Apple, but maybe I should so I can get a break on the prices or push them towards a netbook.

I was always a fan of the VAIOs, as you said they looked great.  I had my dumpy desktop at home and I wanted something that looked decent on the road…however after being talked into buying a Mac I am glad I did.  My favorite feature is being able to work on OSX virtually worry free of viruses and being able to start up bootcamp when the need arises to run a Windows program.  For me it’s like having the best of both worlds…something that looks decent and can run practically everything.
