I am having the same issue.

Tried to import my real export file, and it just says, “unable to import.”

Then I used the sample code referenced in the User Guide (taking out the extra fields, leaving only the body) and the error says, “File contains no exported MT entries.”

For clarification, this is the test file I tried to import:

    TITLE: A simple title
    AUTHOR: Doctor Suess
    DATE: 02/28/1979 12:17:05 AM
    PRIMARY CATEGORY: Books
    CATEGORY: Children
    -----
    BODY:
    This is the body text.
    -----

    EE version is 1.6.7 20090515.

Permissions on the test file are 777.

    Mod: Split from here

    jtnt,

You are missing the trailing 8 dashes in your test file.
You can find out more about the format by reviewing the Movable Type Import Format documentation

I have have also just added a Wiki entry with sample content to help you or other out.

I will try another test, but my original real export file did have them in the file.

I am afraid the MT file format can be rather finicky to work with at times. When in doubt, take a look at the original specification.

John - Used the code in your Wiki Entry as-is and still got the “Unable to Import Entries” error.

File is in the right place, permissions are 777.

Could there be a problem with the importer script?

Hm, not likely I think. Be sure that all linebreaks are in order, including the one after the closing 8 dashes.

Your confidence is encouraging, but unfortunately it’s not helping the script work any better. 😉

Everything seems to be in order. Attached the file I’m using just in case.

FWIW, I’ve tried it with other encodings too. UTF-8, etc.

Just imported it without a hitch. Can you open it with an editor on your server, see everything’s still OK?

Yeah. I can edit it via BBEdit right on the server, see it, download/upload it, etc…

    WTF?

What other options did you select (or not)?

No other options but the default ones. I wonder if it might be an issue with how linebreaks are handled? Do you have SSH access to your server? Can you take a look at the file on the commandline, as it were, using either cat or a local editor such as vi, or pico?

    Looks fine. See attached.

I’ve also tried every line break option BBEdit offers with no luck.

To be honest, I am at a bit of a loss here. As I’ve said, I just imported the file without a problem on my staging server. Can I ask you to upgrade to the very latest build? This is not meant to fix any problems with the current one, but would help us to rule out file corruption.

Me too. The site is, and has been, on the latest build. (See OP.)

Could it be a permissions issue on a temp upload directory the importer uses or something?

If you are absolutely certain about the file format, I would check file permissions; the temp directory should not matter, though. In my experience, it’s probably still an issue with the file format, though. The format (and, by extension, the importer) really is very fussy.
