Shameless self promotion really but many people have asked for the slides/video from my presentation at RefreshAugusta last night.

I’ve posted the slides on my blog - video will be posted as soon as it gets uploaded by Chris Harrison (they guy who runs RefreshAugusta).

    That was a very quick presentation… 2 minutes 😊
Without knowing what RefreshAugusta is… I’m assuming this wasn’t aimed at experience CI users?

Right - the audience was a good mix of designers and programmers, none of which had any experience with CodeIgniter.

The CodeIgniter presentation video is now available.

Damn, that RefreshAugusta site has a hell of a title: http://i39.tinypic.com/2nl8s2h.png

Anyway, the powerpoint itself is rather short, but words are more important anyway 😊 And a small tip about the video, try to prevent yourself from looking in all directions 😉

Yeah, I need to calm down the looking a bit. At the beginning I was a bit nervous and was focusing on making sure I addressed the attendees - it looked sporadic and forced. Later in the video it got better.

The intent was to connect with the attendees, a key skill in public speaking and very effective when done correctly, mine was sloppy.

Edit: Also - one thing I just noticed that looks pretty bad. Right where the camera is sitting, there was about a 10ft. gap between attendees. So it looks like I just whip past the camera really quickly where in reality, I was just looking from one attendee to the next.

Second Edit: Yorick, are you referring to me looking at the slides on the wall (the place I point at)? Watching it again and that is annoying me - can’t believe I did it. My notes were thorough enough I didn’t need to look up there (plus, the slides were on the laptop as well).

I’ve not watched the video, but you had guts to do a proper public presentation, which is never easy!
Stop being so hard on yourself :p You’ll get better the more you do 😊

After watching the presentation something you said Michael got me a bit concerned. You said that a user cant use codeigniter to make a commercial blogging engine because thats what EE is and thats where EllisLabs make all there money, I read the licence and there is no such thing in it. So can we get some clarity on this by a member of EllisLabs please.

Ofcourse you can, I’m not really sure what license CodeIgniter is using but it looks like a modified MIT license.

Haha, that explains why you were looking to your left from time to time 😛

I finally got around watching the presentation. I liked the facts you brought out and emphasising your way of coding in CI is a personal choice.

You mentioned yourself you looked too much to the big screen instead of looking at your laptop screen, facing the public, creating a better connection with the public.

If you are doing more presentations i would suggest you buy a laptop with a smaller screen, it feels like you ‘re hiding behind it. You were wearing a codeigniter t-shirt but the lettering wasn’t visible so half of the message on the t-shirt got lost.
A low cost solution is to tip the screen back the furthest as possible.

In regards to the license - I have no idea where I picked that tidbit up, but after rereading the license I am in agreeance, you can do whatever you want.

    @xwero
It was a borrowed laptop - my wife has mine, a Panasonic Toughbook CF-W4 (very small) in Alaska at the moment. I’ll make sure to stand off to the side of the laptop next time.

I don’t think standing next to you laptop is a good idea if you are going to look at the screen. If you look at experienced/coached speakers they only come from behind their papers/laptop if they have memorized the part they are presenting. Looking down and to your left or right is not a normal conversation pose.
