For how long have you been working with PHP?

I did own some Nintendos too!

    - Super Nintendo
    - Nintendo 64

...but actually… I use PC now and not apple, not because I don’t want to, but Apple is so expensive (I’m acutally saving up for a MacBook). The schools I’ve been on had Macs as their computers. 😊

I had a Nintendo Gameboy… does that count?
And I went PC (windows) > PC (Linux) > PC (Windows) > PC (Linux) etc

I might one day try the whole Mac thing, see if they’re really as amazing as everyone makes out to be (I’ve used a friends hackintosh, so granted its not the sam, but wasn’t all that thrilled by OS X)

Oh yeah, I forgot I had a Gameboy too with Pokemon. 😛

Is Linux really that great? I’ve been hearing so much about Ubuntu!

I personally think Linux is awesome (although not a huge fan of Ubuntu)
It depends on what you want to use it for

The thing that killed it for me the first few times was certain software and games (eg Dreamweaver) but I then realised Eclipse is a much better IDE IMO
The thing that killed it this time is the crappy drivers ATI provide so In can’t get my native res (2048x1152)... I can get it up to ~1600 but it just looks blurry 😖

If you’ve used Mac, you should be at home, as they’re both UNIX based, so have a lot in common (I was shocked I didn’t love OS X for this reason)

I shouldn’t really say this; but if you can’t afford an Apple why not build a hackintosh?

I’d recommend buying a copy of the OS and reading lots about what hardware to choose.

I wrote my first programs on a Dragon 64 way back in 1982 lol, then went through various languages, used amstrad dumb terminal PCW’s, IBM networks, did the whole windows/DOS journey, DOS 5, win 3.11 -> win 2000 (win XP too but I wouldn’t install it by preference) then a few years ago I migrated to Fedora and haven’t looked back, been programming in php for about 6 years now, but it’s not just for web development ;oP I’ve written a few command line based apps and application wrappers

I’d rather buy a “real MacBook”.. hehe. 😛

Sounds like you’ve been through a lot, Evil Wizard—it’s awesome. 😊

i’ve got an iPhone if that counts? I really want to buy a new 13” aluminum macbook with multitouch support, makes using a trackpad much quicker than a normal laptop. That way you don’t really need to bring a mouse along in your bag because the trackpad is soo good.

Also aluminum body + glass screen + touchpad makes it awesome… as you can see I really want one, but can’t afford it at the moment :S

I have been playing with PHP for probably 3-4 years now. I say playing because that really and truly is all I do. I started with PHP because several projects in school required a web front end and I was given the option of Java or PHP. I would rather stab myself in the forehead than use Java. That’s beside the point. Your right though, it’s very hard to know “everything” about PHP. The API is ridiculously large. CodeIgniter and MVC are not very difficult once you understand a few basic things. If you need help with any of the basic ideas, I’m sure anyone around here would be happy to explain or help you out. As far as, how do people come up with the creative ideas and such.. practice/experience. Nobody starts in PHP/CodeIgniter knowing “everything”. I’m no expert, but most of the stuff I know comes from helping others, reading the questions/solutions from others, and just building stuff myself. I don’t have clients, I dabble in PHP and such just because, well, I guess I’m a dork and I think it’s fun 😊 It could just be me, but I always find the best way to learn something, is to do it. If I wanna know how to do something, I start trying to code it myself. If I have questions along the way, I come here. If I think there may be a better way to accomplish something, I come here and get advice and get feedback from others. Don’t be afraid to ask questions around the forum, just make sure you put some effort into trying to find the answer yourself first. It gets aggravating when someone comes in here just looking for someone to give them code or do something for them and its obvious they havent tried at all.

    Good luck.

    Thank you. 😊

Maybe some things can be harder for me because I also design and I’m not “newbie” with designs and graphics. I’ll have to focus on both things which can feel stressed and such things. There’s so many thing that I’d like to know more about or be able to do. Here’s a few:
    —3D and animation
—Illustration (I’ve done it before, but I’d like to be a lot more better because I want a future with design)
—RoR, well, I don’t know, it seems fun and I’ve seen how fast you actually can code a blog!

If you’re refering to the one line

    ruby script/generator scaffold blog

    It doesn’t count

Besides, based on the video tutorial, you can make a blog in 20 minutes in CI 😛

Know the feeling. I’m the same way. I have a thousand things I want to learn. Just never get around to it.

What parts of CI do you not understand?

I love learning new languages, the more languages, the better equipped you are to find the right one to accomplish the current task, the skill resides in getting these languages to talk and play nice, which isn’t always easy

It also means (or is it just me) that you end up using the wrong syntax half the time!

Having been doing lots of PHP lately, I do some Java at work, and put dollar signs everywhere, call my methods ‘function’ and always forget to specify a return type (or void) etc

Definitely not just you 😊 I’ve been messing with Python alot the last few days and I keep wanting to put stuff in curly braces to denote nesting and keep putting ;‘s at the end of my lines hehe
