Mac Mini vs iMac for a PC Guy

Is it possible to re-rout the iMac video to another monitor? If so, I could still use my main monitor, and get the Apple Wireless keyboard and mouse. Obviously, this wouldn’t be the best solution if the iMac’s monitor has to be on in order for the machine to function.

I know you ended up with the Mini, but I thought I’d follow up anyway. It looks like the iMac comes with a DisplayPort so, yes, it can be hooked up to an external monitor.

+1 for 1Password. Combine it with Dropbox and you can have all your logins on which Mac you are on.

Well, I found 1Password last night before seeing any of your recommendations. It is a pretty good replacement for RoboForm, but I am used to using RoboForm’s drop-down as a bookmark manager for sites that need a login. With 1Password, you have to go to the site first and then tell it to log in. Other than that, it seems to be a great solution. I think that I’ll buy it, especially since it will also work with my iPod Touch.

Erin, back to VNC if you’ve got a moment. I have it working by using UltraVNC Viewer on my PC and Vine Server on the Mini. It looks great, but it is very slow at screen refreshing and just lags in general. This is particularly noticeable when I move the mouse over the dock. The icon magnification is a true mess. I think that this has something to do with the Mini because when I VNC into a PC it is just like being in front of the screen. Do you have the same problem? I’ve Googled endlessly trying to find a solution without any luck. It is usable, but not very tolerable.

    Thanks again to all.

Use the AllBookmarks add on. It places a drop down menu option in the Mac’s Menu Bar with all your bookmarks so you can auto login.

You don’t need a 3rd party as Macs have a VNC server built in. Just enable Screen Sharing and away you go, although to make it work with PCs I found I needed to have a password. I will see if I can find the website where I found this info.

That looks perfect! I’ll give it a go. Thanks.

EDIT: AllBookmarks works great! Highly recommended. I also bought 1Password and was able to easily import my logins and safenotes from Roboform. Sweet!

Yeah, I learned about that after installing Vine Server. Haven’t tested it though. If you can find the website, that would be great.

So, from your PC is using VNC just like being at the Mac? Or, does it lag a bit?

BTW, I converted one of my VMWare Workstation Windows VM to Fusion and copied it over to the Mac. Works great. My next PC may very well be a high-end Mac using either BootCamp or Fusion for Windows.

Ok, I finally have remote control working acceptably. I switched from VNC to using LogMeIn (free). It works much more smoothly, which I find to be strange. You would think that doing VNC over the local network would be a lot faster, but it isn’t in this case. I must have something going on somewhere in the network that is slowing VNC down. Anyway, I’m happy now.
