I have done a fresh install onto WinXP/Xampp of EE 1.6.7 (PHP 5.2.9 MySQL 5.1.33)

The installation went without any reported errors
The front end of the site all appears correct
        .htaccess works to remove index.php

I can’t login to this site—it complains if wrong user or password
No complaint if correct user/password - but not logged in :(

Running wizard.php—URL Segment Support -> No - What does this mean?

    I suspect it’s something simple - Can I ask for a clue

    Edit: Corrected MySQL version

Can you try without URL rewriting for debugging purposes?

Yes the .htaccess was just a test to see if url rewrite was working
wizard.php said URL Segment Support wasn’t working… not sure what that means

    wizard.php said URL Segment Support wasn’t working…

The Docs say ... “If the Server Wizard lists URL Segment Support as Unsupported, you will need to run your ExpressionEngine site using query strings”

But urls in the form of “http://domain.com/index.php/site/about” - works

Do you’ve got a link? Is this a public site?

This is a fresh install of both Xampp and EE on my local development system.
I’ll do some testing of the Xampp install, maybe some kind of session issue.

The one thing I notice when trying to log in to the CP
the URL becomes “http://renderbox.peccavi.com/system/index.php?S=f65fef588f2dc24060d574d40d015599827cdf94” But still at login page.

This problem seems to be browser dependant
Besides Xampp and EE being fresh installs .. so is IE8

I can log into this install with Firefox

Now to figure why IE don’t like it ... I login here with IE8

try clearing your browser cache & make sure that your /system/cache files are writeable by apache.

I have tried this but still with IE8 can not login.
There is no problem when using Firefox, Safari or Opera.
IE8 works fine here and with my online EE sites (1.6.5)

I put this local-box problem on the back burner…

Peccavio, unfortunately we can’t help much with troubleshooting local installs, except to recommend that you try things like changing settings via your config.php to set backend logins to use sessions only.

    $conf['admin_session_type'] = "s";

See if that makes a difference.

NOTE: Changes make via the config.php file trump any settings you make while inside EE.

Thank you, the config.php entry does make a difference but not solution.
I have conceeded this problem is not a show stopper and not an EE Problem.
Something in system setup affecting IE8’s ability with cookies & sessions.

Too much of this system has fresh installs, will not hack EE setup.
This setup is workable with multiple browsers, fine for my purpose.
I am sure when system setup is polished, this problem will vanish.
