We’re about to embark on our 1st EE enabled site for a client. Woot!

But, I have a couple of question in regards to license purchasing.

1. What’s the standard practice of getting EE license? Does the agency (us) buy the license on behalf of client? or they need to purchase it themselves?
2. If we buy it on behalf of them, what would happen to the support portion?
3. Like-wise, if they buy the license, how could we get support if help is needed?

Either way is fine. I would suggest to buy the license on behalf of your client (then transfer it, once your involvement with the project ends), that way you can take advantage of our cumulative milestones in the future:

3+ purchases, 10% off
6+ purchases, 15% off
10+ purchases, 20% off
15+ purchases, 25% off
20+ purchases, 30% off
30+ purchases, 40% off
40+ purchases, 50% off

The license is attached to an account here on expressionengine.com. If you are doing work on a licensed install but don’t have a license yourself you can get a “support credit” which allows you to use the full extent of the forums also.

Do you have more info on the license transfer procedure? What would be involved normal as such?

It’s basically a flag in our database, saying “yes, this person does work on a licensed install so they are entitled to full support for that”. Again, please email sales for details.

Unless you purchase the license first, Ellis Labs won’t give you the developer credit. They won’t apply the developer credit to your account after the fact. They will only apply a support credit.

Yes, to receive the volume discount all purchases must be made on the same account.  They can later be transferred and the volume discount is retained through a developer credit.

A support credit allows a developer to get technical support without owning any licenses, as long as they can prove, through supply of the license number of the site, that they are developing for a licensed site.

I’m not sure what you’re implying here? If somebody else buys a license obviously they will be credited with the purchase, and it will count towards their milestones.

My client purchases EE MSM about 9 months ago. They think they only got the personal version and not the corporate version. How do I check which license they have.

If I need to upgrade from personal to corporate - I can purchase that upgrade - but what’s the next step then?

They are a for profit college. The site is just being used for marketing, no ecommerce, etc. I assume the corporate license is required?

The user can go to the download area (https://secure.expressionengine.com/download.php) and it will show if it’s personal or commercial.  That is something your client needs to do - or the owner of the license.

And only the owner of the license can upgrade/renew as well.

Yes, a commercial license is required in this case.
