Maybe one of you guys can give me some tips on this…

My iTunes library is quickly overpowering my Mac’s hard drive, and I’m wondering if any of you know of a way I can store my audio/video files on an external server/hard drive (therefore clearing my computer’s HD), and then access my music library even when I’m not home.

I do currently have a 1TB Time Capsule, but I’m not sure if I can set that up to work?  What about multiple macs?  I’m not looking for some expensive equipment, just something easy to set up and use.

Any ideas on this?  Has anyone done this?

THere’s a gazillion ways to do it. If you just want to expose your music externally, I just saw a device mention that plugs in and works (it is a Wide-Area NAS, essentially). However, I would recommend a Mac Mini as a media server. Small form factor, works great.

You can move the whole of your iTunes library to a completely external hard drive if you want by just moving it there and then creating a symlink that points to the folder and placing that where the folder used to be. Works fine if you want to do that for instance.

    Best wishes,

SimplifyMedia is a nice way to make your iTunes library accessible anywhere.

I use it to stream my library when I’m in the car (via their iPhone app) or away using my laptop.

I have an old G4 Mac Mini that makes a great server at the house.
It then streams to my AppleTV, and I just added SimplifyMedia per Ryan’s recommendation. Now I can access music anywhere.

I think there are ways to make your Time Capsule work as Network Attached Storage (NAS).
But I know for sure (and have used it for a long time) that you can move your iTunes to an external hard drive.
Just change your iTunes directory to the newly attached external, and then “File > Consolidate Library”
and it will move everything over to the new external.

Technically, the Time Capsule is a NAS.  Just not a reliable or fast one.
