    Hiya,

Hopefully a quick one this but also hopefully might get lots of answers.

I’m wondering if anyone has any links to really great image gallery sites that have both horizontal and vertical images in their stock and as to how they lay them out on both search (multi-image) pages and also the entry (main image information page) templates.

Just wondering about some really great way to show both and not have a layout getting messed up.

Thanks in advance for any great examples / links.

    Best wishes,

    Mark

    Hiya,

Thanks for the link. A nice looking site that one yes.

I was wondering though if anyone had any links to say professional photo sites such as royalty free sites that have both vertical and horizontal images and show them as the whole image instead of just cropping them out to squares?

Also preferably sites that don’t just follow the standard layout that all other online photo sites tend to follow.

Thanks again for the link though dvancouver, much appreciated.

    Best wishes,

    Hi Guys,

Thanks for the links, definitely starting to get closer to what I’m thinking. I have seen both of those before and a heap more but I’m more looking for something completely different to all the rest. This site comes kind of close on the single entry pages but I also need a few examples of search results for images too and they all seem to lay them out in exactly the same way. I know the reason for this but I’m sure that someone must have done things just a little different at some point and that’s really what I’m looking for, something that stands out as completely different to the rest but that is still very professional looking.

A tall order I know but I’m sure you’re all up to the challenge aren’t you? 😉

Thanks again for the help on this.

    Best wishes,

    Mark

I tend to align images top left within a square or crop. For larger images I might align right to the edge of the website if the main navigation is on the left so you get the weight pushed to either side. But you can do other things like on a thumbnail page make the width always the same and then align top or bottom if you want to emphasise the horizontal axis they run along - this’ll create a washing line effect or skyline depending on whether its aligned top or bottom. Or you could make the height the same and run all the thumbs together to make it into more of a collage strip and then stack rows on top of each other so that you’d end up with a ragged right hand side. Another idea might be to use some algorithm to organise all the images together but constrained within a set area - like Newsmap.

It really depends on the rest of your layout design, the effect you’re seeking to achieve and what objectives are driving the design.

Also, try checking out something like Patterntap for general patterns or look under photographers or portfolios in inspiration sites like Styleboost.
