Just Give Up And Use ExpressionEngine

    Well, I have been building a Blog, file manager, Forum system, and other useful stuff on top of CodeIgniter now for a while now. However, this morning it dawned on me that I should stop wasting my time and just give-in to using ExpressionEngine for the Blog and Forum part. After all, these Ellislabs forums are the best I have every used online and they even support code highlighting. I didn’t even need to register on this site as the Ellis guys are smart enough to share a user base!

    At any rate what do I mean by “give-in” and use EE? Well, I am really into performance - sometimes so much that I lose track of reality in chasing RAM usage. Take wordpress, for example - it is slower than Christmas. Here is a sample from the index page

    script_time = 0.172049 (Dedicated Core2Quad PC)
    memory_used = 9006640
    memory_peak_usage = 9141768
    mysql_queries = 0
    included_size = 1427212
    included_count = 60

    You expect me to use a system that requires 9MB of RAM just to show the latest posts on the index page!? Ya right, I don’t care how simple your admin area is! This leads to building other systems like my current blog were I can get the RAM usage down to about 150kb on cached pages.

    However, there comes a point when, after months of building, you no longer care about speed as you are so desperate to be done with a project. That is where EE comes in.

    script_time = 0.243185 (Dedicated Core2Quad PC)
    memory_used = 5447672
    memory_peak_usage = 6011192
    included_size = 837702
    included_count = 23

    I think I can live with +5MB page loads as long as I can get in there to enable page output caching and DB memcaching.

    So I don’t really know what this topic is about other than to say that EE is twice as fast as WP and I can’t wait for it to move over to CodeIgniter so I can take a swing at it.

    Oh, and I’d like to say “Hi” to the EE community as this is my first post.  😉

    Just for the record, you know EE comes with a full set of caching mechanisms already, right?

    I figured it must as they did a relatively good job on the CI system.

    Yeah the caching in EE works a treat and I’ve had no problems on server load with any EE sites, Wordpress on the other hand I’m constantly battling with. Especially when you get shoddy plugins in there as well.

    With $29 Million in funding you would think they could hire a programmer or two…

    Ditto. I’ve had only one issue with EE and that was on a server with a low default PHP memory configuration. Outside of that, EE’s performance rocks, especially when compared with WP, Joomla, and folks, even with EE’s extra SQL queries.

    You gotta love an investor that puts money into an organization that pushes a popular product that’s free.

    Rick, track down those guys.
