its because as web developers we feel the need to click every link that is placed in front of us. no matter if it says “Free MacPro” or “This link will not hurt your computer by downloading a virus”. we cant help it. im going to try to find a help group.
i use a mac so viruses is not a concern of mine… i can click ANYTHING (almost). 😊

You’ll need to start getting out of that mindset. Mac trojans are on the rise as Mc’s gain market share. I wont start up a big convo on that, but bare in mind that one day if you use your Mac too much without protection, it might fall off. :grrr:

But right now I’m care-free…
And I doubt that it will get as bad as the windows market since OSX (and other linux-based operating systems) is built on good security and don’t have it as add-on.
Let’s face it, most of the evil stuff on pc comes thru:
a) using IE
b) ActiveX
c) running the useraccount as administrator.
d) user installing apps containing evil stuff.
But as you say, market share is rising and that makes OSX a target for hackers, viruses and trojans.

Actually not at all. Most of the security issues for Windows come from users not thinking about security issues and assuming:
i can click ANYTHING
The *nix platform is secure against hackery. If you download a virus you still get a virus.

True, but unless you are root (which is not the default) then it can only trash your space, as oppose to the whole system, where as in Windows, you default to the admin account (is that still true for Vista and 7? I’ve succeeded in avoiding them so wouldn’t know)

I use Ubuntu so viruses concerns me neither, but I don’t have to pay for overpriced hardware. 😉

No, when a program tries to access “root” functionality you have to explicitly tell it to go ahead and do so (unless you disable User Access Control). Vista’s was annoying as hell, so a lot of people disabled it. 7’s is much better - I’ve left it at the default (most secure) setting and not been annoyed by it at all.
The window is pretty neat actually, tells you what the program was, who developed it, and where you got it from (downloaded from Internet, in the DVD tray, etc).

Glad to hear 7’s is better than Vista. I remember trying out a pre-release copy and seeing
Windows Firewall is trying to access the internet.

I lol’ed quite a lot.

I wouldn’t really consider it overpriced. Sure it is expensive, but atleast it works properly.

is that trying to imply that Ubunut/Linux doesn’t work properly, or that PCs don’t?

That windows systems don’t work. Linux systems work pretty well actually.

I’m not gonna argue with you about Ubuntu! 😊
As far as the overpricing goes, as a webdeveloper I make quite a good living at it so I can afford the luxury of using Macs for development. I’m not saying OSX is the best operating system, but I like that it works AND that I can run “industy-standard” apps like the Adobe Creative Suit, Logic (yes I’m a musician too…) etc.
If there where no Macs I would definitly go for a linux operating system. If there where no Macs and no linux operating systems, I’d probably not develop anymore… 😊

Unfortunately you did and now I am not laughing at the hillarious spamming conversation.
Why do all the funny threads get ruined by people bickering about what OS is better, we all know Win98 blows them all out of the water!!!! 😉
P.S. if you think I was serious I am not!

...and that closes the discussion! 😊
Sorry for leading it to same old os-discussion!
