It means that there is a dedicated File Manager in EE 2.0 that is available throughout the CP. In 1.x you can only upload via the Publish/Edit interface. Its certainly not meant to compete with a dedicated FTP app, but it allows a lot more than can currently be done in 1.x. It is also not the same as a desktop OS type of file management. I’m not going to list out every feature it includes, but I wanted to set some sort of expectations here 😊

OKay, we’ll just wait to see what happens there.

Just read Leslie’s blog post - looks like you all had a really good time. I loved the idea of 1 to 1 meetings to go through peoples needs and to show them Kaylee - great idea and I suspect will have got you good quality feedback. Wish I had been able to fly over.

The new features mentioned sound superb and the right step in the right direction and if that is the flavour of the things top come then we are in for a big treat!

ExpressionEngine 1.6.7 will continue to be available for download and purchase after 2.0’s release. We view 2.0’s upcoming release as more of update to an operating system. EE 1.x has a significant install base and we estimate it will take a minimum of 2-3 years for the majority of the community to update. We will support 1.6.7 for a long time to come and we think it will remain a viable market for add-on developers for some time.

In other words, 1.6.7 is not going away. There is no reason to wait for 2.0 to get started. You can be safe knowing it will be supported for a long time and that the upgrade process will be straightforward. There will be no pressure from EllisLab to jump to 2.0 right away. Like 1.x before it, 2.0 will need to prove itself in the marketplace. We’re very confident it will.

Very good news. Because usually its “please update to the latest”.

    - The Gallery Module is being deprecated. The plan is to incorporate features directly into 2.0 that allow people to accomplish the same thing without having to maintain an additional module. There will be a migration path so that people who rely on the Gallery can easily move it to a Channel instead. We have yet to determine is if this will take place in 2.0 or 2.1, but either way the Gallery sees the beginning of the end as of 2.0.

So its finally happends, and when this hopefully goes smoothly, i understand that search is then possible, very nice and cool!

About the rest of the blog entry - thanks for that, it was interesting and have info that i at least have been waiting for a long time. Keep’n rockin!

We’ll still ask users to run the latest version and build for trouble shooting purposes, and of course important security considerations will continue to be added into the EE 1 branch.

    Thanks for the updates Leslie.
You are doing a great job keeping everyone’s eye on the prize aka 2.0.

For anybody looking for more SXSW general interest:
SXSW has a nice page on Youtube primo vid’s, clicking on the Talks playlist brings up some goodies.
Also, my nephew has DirectTV and they had an SXSW channel for the music portions, live in the streets and concerts. The streets were jam packed with people, looks like a regular Mardi Gras for geeks.
Brings it all home, that it’s a design geeks must visit 😊

Very happy to hear that we’ll have true ‘file management’ in 2.0!

This week I’ve spent days working with imgresizer, MH file upload, Low’s file manager, simple file upload and LG imagemanger. All in an attempt to develop a dummy proof file management system.

I also can’t wait for the end of the image gallery and see that functionality as an integral part of EE. Hurray!

Do you mean that migration path is taking place in 2.0 or 2.1 or is this overall thinking about the gallery module?

The gallery module as a stand-alone module will cease to exist. It’s being faded out, although it hasn’t been decided yet whether this happens in 2.0 already. All the functionality currently found in the gallery module will be incorporated in the weblog, sorry, channel module.

Ok, so it should be “clickable” workflow to “remove” gallery module to channel module and switch the gallery entries there. If i understand right, gallery categories changes to channel categories and caption etc. will be regular textfields and searchable then too?

I know i ask many questions, sorry heh =) It’s just that i wonder how big work is it to make this gallery into gallerychannel with many entries(images atm). Or am i understanding wrong something…dunno. What i understand that atm. image entry becomes channel entry and so on…

Well anycase, this is way too early for this kind of discuss so i just wait that all comes alive and then get back into this. Just hit me with the beta when its available and im happy to testdrive it =)

    Thanks.
