_Oli, I’ve have a MSM install I’m going to test on, but I won’t be able to get to it until later today, or worse case in the morning.

This way, I’ll have a controlled way of testing. If I see the same behavior on mine, I’ll have the dev team take a look.

Thank you ever so much for taking time to look into this.

_Oli, some of us can reproduce this on your site and others can’t. Can you let us know what browser you’re running when you’re testing this?

    Hi Lisa,

    I have tested on:

    Ie6,7,8 firefox 3, safari 3 & 4 on win xp(on pc)
Ie6,7,8 firefox 3, safari 4 on win xp (on mac through parallels)

    firefox 3, safari 3 & 4 on mac (leopard)

I have tested using different type of internet connections too (3G, Edge network, gprs, adsl, cable). I thought that the problem came from my work connection as we have several lines bonded into one hence the “connection” test. No difference.

I have tried changing the settings on the server’s firewall, as both sites are on the same server I thought this would be pointless but still tried. No luck…

Could this be something to do with php? I have a plesk server, each site is in a separate folder.. paths look like this

    /var/www/vhosts/site_a/httpdocs/
    /var/www/vhosts/site_b/httpdocs/

Also, I have safe mode off for both and open_basedir set to none.

Phew… as you can see, I have tested 😊

Also the weird bit is that when the jump happens (so when the url goes from site_a to site_b) the “user message” page you see when the url is www.site_b.com/index.php (green back, pink writing) actually belongs to site_a!

site_a has styled User Message Template where site_b is still on the default white/grey template…

    very weird :S

My test with this was on Safari 3.  It’s really hard to troubleshoot something we don’t see; give us some time and we’ll try to see if we can spot anything.  Sorry this isn’t an instant fix one.

Oli, does this happen in both directions? site_a to site_b and site_b to site_a?

I just tested this in Safari 4 and didn’t see any flashing.  I’m curious though - you’re using the forum login form.  Can you try setting up a login form in a normal template and see if you still see the flashing?

    both ways yes.

If you remove the “forums” from the url you will see the normal login form.

    I have just pm’d you a link to a bare template ( just a form ) still same results…

Ok, the only thing I see that is “flashing” is the status message, but not the content in the page.

However, Sue and I are chatting about this, and I’m wondering if I misunderstood.  When you said flashing, I thought you meant that in the content area you see a flash of each site before you finish the login load.

Is that the case, or is the problem that you see the wrong User Message template: ie, the one from the Site you are not logging in from?

Perhaps a screencast of what you are seeing would be a good idea, to make sure we’re all on the same page. =)

    Sue sent me the video….

... or do you just mean the URL changing as it gets you logged in?

Ok, that helped a ton.  For developing a site, you can always leave it out of the config.php array of which sites to log you into; so you can still develop that.

That said, I’m not sure if the URL should change like that; it’s not something that has ever come up before and I never noticed myself.  I’ll check in with that now that we know exactly what is happening.

Part of the confusion, fyi, is that I thought you meant the content area was flashing through each site, which would be much more disconcerting. 😉  Sorry about that, now that we have this down pat though, let me find out if it’s expected or not.

    You’re a star!

I’m glad the french accent didn’t throw you too much 😉

Not in the least; but if you’d spoken French it would have thrown me a lot. 😉
