I am looking at EE as a solution for a client site that is community oriented.
Is it possible for members to have their own photo/video gallery, perhaps as part of their profile?
Thanks

Hi, fensterbaby - no, this would be against our license due in part to the software intentions. The goal for ExpressionEngine is to provide a CMS where many authors can contribute to a shared space, not as a user-centric system where each user can have their own space.

Hi Lisa
Okay, I get that.
But perhaps I could get close enough with this approach. If I set up a photo blog and give members the ability to upload photos I could then do a search for all photos posted by any given member.
Wouldn’t that work?
Same approach as giving members the ability to post to a common blog and then in the profile there is already the ability to ‘see all my posts’. I could just add ‘see all my photo posts’... yes?
Also, does the photo gallery include ability to upload video or audio?
Thanks
Greg

The photo gallery does not include audio or video. Also, the photo gallery permissions are “all or nothing” - so this isn’t something you’d want to grant user access to in general. You could use a weblog with your system, but ultimately it depends on the goal of the site. If the goal is to allow artists to share artistic works in a shared, communal system, that is allowed.
If the goal is to give each artist their own mini-gallery, then that is not allowed by our license.
If you want to go into further detail on this, please email sales.
Thanks!

Hmmm. Dancing around the edges of your license…
Maybe it would be easier if I spell out a bit more what the client is wanting to do.
This would be an Alaska oriented magazine site. Most of the content would be internally generated and posted to various weblogs. But the client wants site members to also be able to contribute content. Perhaps one of the weblogs would be an events weblog where members could post upcoming event information which gets moderated by an editor.
The idea with the user uploaded material is that members could upload their photos and videos to various communal weblogs. So a visitor to the site could for example search for photos of Denali, Anchorage or whatever.
So would that work? I understand that it won’t work via the photo gallery, but photos, video and possibly audio be incorporated into a weblog posting?
thanks

So let me get this straight. If we built a website with EE and later decided we wanted to customize the member profile page with a personal gallery, we would not be able to do that? I hope I’m misunderstanding because that’s just crazy.

Hi, Greg - yes, that would be allowed and is well within the license and intentions of the software.
Ditchmonkey - correct, you can not use ExpressionEngine to host sites for third-parties be they weblogs or galleries. If you have project specific questions, then please go ahead and email sales.
