Awesome story on Wired.com.  Lets join the fight!  😡

Even Microsoft is supporting the campaign. Norwegian news site Teknisk Ukeblad reports Thursday that Microsoft Norway’s Alveberg Isabella says, “We of course hope that our users follow us on [upgrading] to Internet Explorer 7.”

Microsoft should further support it by releasing new browsers for Windows 2000…

    IE7 doesn’t work on Win2000?

I think that’s one of the main reasons we still see so much IE6 around.
IE7 was only released for WinXP or higher.

Global stats suggest IE6 and lesser is still accounting for around 20% of browser share, and I think a sizable part of that is possibly due to coporate Win2000 systems.

Go go the Norwegians and kudos to them for shouting it out loud on a public site!

Never would have thunk it, but that does make sense.

The Norwegians are my new favourite foreign people
I seriously hope this becomes a worldwide trend, I am more than fed up with supporting IE6

    I’ll second that emotion.

On the other hand, billable hours is your friend. For almost two years I’ve been charging a rate to build sites that are, first and foremost, XHTML and CSS valid (which, for the most part, is not so difficult in Safari and Firefox, Mac or Windows). Then, there’s an add-on charge for getting the site to work with MSIE 7.x, and a separate charge for getting the site to work with MSIE 6.x. In some cases the add-on charge is equal to the original site development.

    Billable hours is your friend.

Would you have a lot of hours in the week where you could not get billable work if it were not for the IE6-adjustments? If not, wouldn’t you rather do some creative work instead of this? 😉

    Just my 2c.

The two are not related. If a site project needs full on MSIE compatibility then it costs more than the site does with simple validation of XHTML and CSS.

As to “creative work instead,” that’s fun and all, and can be a pleasant diversion, but I’d rather eat and pay bills.

…I’d rather eat and pay bills.

and I’d rather get paid for making the site look the way the client intended without having to bend over backwards to do it so that then I get some time to rest!!! 😊

    So, no MSIE compatibility, huh?

I wonder how much brand damage Microsoft did to itself by keeping these old browsers in circulation. Billable hours or not, this issue alone was enough for me to view them irrevocably as the stifling Soviet Union of software and I now have a visceral distaste for the very name of their company.

    Here, here!!

Microsoft is an evil, criminal company, willfully intent on perpetuation of their ill gotten gains, haughtily foisting their sub-standard products on unsuspecting customers (who know not the alternatives). Such companies always get theirs in the end (not that there’s anything wrong with that), but it’s unfortunate that it takes so long and so much trouble is heaped upon so many.
