Menu Generation?

I’ve been playing with the Core for some time, and have a question that perhaps the Pages module will solve. One of the appealing things about many other CMS that I cannot quite figure out in EE is automatic menu generation: In other words, I want a content author to be able to add a page—and have that page appear in the main menu—without having to hard-code the links manually.

I could use a separate menu app, but was wondering if it could be done right in EE. (maybe with variable tagging?) Or creating a weblog that is nothing but page titles with links to the templates?

I’m confident there has to be a way! Please let me know if the Page module holds the answer, or if it’s generally done some other way.

Hi, Alohashirt - this can be done with the weblog entries tag by simply having your main navigation items be entries in a weblog.  The Pages Module simply lets you give a weblog entry your own custom URI.

So yes, this can be done with ExpressionEngine.  If you need help with it, a post in How To would be most appropriate.

Thanks. I figured that Weblogs held the key, but posted in pre-sales because I wondered if the Pages Module (buying the paid version) was an automatic solution. In any case, I will be buying EE. I’ve found that it takes a while to get the hang of the simple things that other CMS handle behind the scenes—but once you learn the “recipe,” it’s amazing how creative EE lets you become.

I never want to go back to any other CMS. It would be like placing an operator-assisted telephone call after getting used to a cell. Make that an iPhone or a Blackberry Bold!
