the past couple weeks i have been playing around as a system admin at home. grab a copy of ubuntu server and tinker to learn more linux tricks for administering a server. been thinking about what i could use this for. for me it would mostly be ftp into my media collection or files from the outside world and file sharing between my network.

just wondering who here operates any home servers and what purpose they serve. host any mission critical apps on them? whats your up time like? and what OS flavor of linux do you run?

Ubuntu rules my house - 2 desktops (mine and the wife’s), 2 laptops (mine and the wife’s) and my development server.

The 4 non-server machines are running desktop 8.10 and the server is running server 8.10.

The only reasons the server has ever been restarted is because of a power outage or a kernel upgrade.  Otherwise it’s fine being up 24x7 for months at a time.

I don’t have any of my machines set up for access from the outside world, but it works great as a local development environment and a file server using NFS.

I should be getting a new pc 2day, so my old, xp, 512mb, Pentium 4 will be wiped and I will then reinstall ubuntu or other linux on it to use it a a development server. I may even use it to test cluster configurations.

I have a 1TB fileserver running FreeNAS, and an Ubuntu server. The Ubuntu one runs squid, gnump3d as well as DNS + DHCP services for the local LAN.

I do all web development on my main computer or laptop running WAMP.

anyone try to use timemachine with it? i know you have to install a new protocol in ubuntu i found a great article on how to do it when i get the time to do it.

if you have a mac this is a great option because you dont have to buy time capsule that is expensive as hell you can just buy 1TB drives for like $100 USD.
