I’m always hesitant to criticize the design work of others since 1) we each see things differently, with divergent likes, dislikes and requirements, and 2) I don’t see myself as good enough to be overly critical of others.

However, I have to say I was really disappointed in the design and usability of a new news site I was looking forward to: the Global Post. So I thought I’d check in with a group of some of the best designers I’ve seen: you guys.

This site was much ballyhooed around the Net during past couple of months for its strategy in providing international news during a time when newspapers and news services are drastically reducing international coverage and closing foreign offices. And it’s still being talked about and written about. But when it went live and I first checked it out, I did a mental “Huh?”

For a new news site looking to change the way news is gathered, presented and paid for — and apparently with some not insignificant financial backing — I can’t help but be disappointed in their presentation. And I don’t mean just the looks (though I mean that as well). It seems confusing to me, not user friendly in any way.

So what do you guys think?

Can’t say I’m overly impressed myself too. The carrousel on the frontpage is simply annoying and all the scrollbars on the article lists are just hindering useability.
And the “Go There"box is probably the most uninspiring use of Slideshowpro I’ve seen in a while.
The entire design of the front page just feels slapped together rather than a cohesive design.
Of course, newspapers online is a tough nut to crack, check the Guardian‘s website for a better example though 😊
