i agree i say no to the post limit but we need something that will suggest already posted content to you that relates to your post. but make it so that the responses are limited to say 1 year old so we are not showing outdated stuff to people.

It’s kinda funny how a thread gets started on a common topic…and the replies are usually “gaw! SEARCH NOOB!! RAWR” ..So, the search commences and the first 10 or so results are similar threads with the same response… “search newb!”

Sometimes, someone with more experience knows where to find certain things. If i was recently discussing a topic and someone comes in and starts a thread asking the same question, I point them to the thread with the topic.  In my opinion, telling someone to “use the search feature” without any other relevant helpful information is a waste of everyone’s time. If you don’t want to waste your time, then don’t. The “back” button is quicker to get to than the “reply” button.

I have had issues and I have searched, but it’s very often that I spend a lot of time looking for an issue, only to find topics that don’t relate to what I’m dealing with. Sometimes it’s easier to start up a new thread and explain my situation and how I’m doing things and to get help from a community than it is to search, search, search.

I do find a lot of my answers because I use the search feature, but sometimes those answers are buried and difficult to find. If noone ever asks questions, then the community is pointless.

RTFM is another answer that irritates me. I know where the manual is. I know how to read it. I do read it. But that doesn’t mean I have it memorized. The manual has very VERY basic documentation, and that’s great - but some things go above and beyond what the manual documents, and that’s when I ask my questions

I can understand everyone’s frustration with first time posters asking for “teh forumzez sofware” - I get that - but limiting the first 5-10 posts from a new registered users will only piss people off, especially if they have a legitimate question on usage. If I just registered, and read the manual, searched, etc, but really needed help and get nailed with a message that says “sorry, you must contribute at least 5 posts before starting a thread”... I’m gonna be pissed. what could I possibly contribute 5 posts to real quick before i can ask my questions? eh..ok I’ll just spam the forum real quick so I can write my question and get some feedback. nice. now I risk getting banned too.

dear god i’m rambling now. I don’t mean to single anyone out. I don’t mean to hate on CI forums. I think this is a great community and I’ve learned a lot from some very gracious people here.  I just think limiting users to making x amount of posts before starting a thread is a selfish step so that you don’t have to see threads that annoy you.

If it is a pointless thread asking for CI forum software for $50, then report it (if the feature is built in..i dunno. software evolves!) Let a moderator lock it and the thread will disappear.

Anyway, that’s just my perspective, my opinion on the matter. I am a newb. I search as often as I can. I read the manual as often as I can. I think there are a lot of others that hate asking questions because of the dreaded “RTFM and SEARCH” responses. I’m one that’s always happy to help when I can, because I understand their frustrations. You should too. If not, don’t waste your time. 😊

If the post contains 0 capital letters, is 10% Z’s and has more than one exclamation mark in succession, disable the post button. 😊

I can see both sides of this issue, and to be honest, I don’t know what the best answer is.

When I started out with CodeIgniter (shortly after it was first released) this forum was one of my ‘regulars’ - regularly checking for new posts several times a day when I got the time and helping out where I could. But after a while, the ratio of n00b posts in badly-typed English to genuine help requests was quite high; and I eventually stopped checking the forum because it was just so full of garbage posts - it was just too much effort for me to filter out the crap.

Another story… In my line of work I sometimes create scripts in AutoIt to create mini applications or to automate some tasks. I got on well with the provided help files and forum searches. But on one occasion, I needed to ask a question about a problem that was preventing me completing a program. At the time (it may still be the same, I don’t know) you had to post 10 replies in the help/discussion forum to be able to post a new thread. This was no good at all - and in the end, after a lot of wasted time, I just found another way to solve the problem.

    Just my 2p worth 😊

I don’t think the 10 posts limit is an appropriate solution to the problem, for the reasons already mentioned.
But how about a short text that is displayed when someone starts a new topic, talking about how you should first search the existing topics for an answer, how you should describe the problem in detail and what you have already tried to solve it, etc. There could even be a checkbox “I agree” that you have to tick before submitting the new topic. The text and checkbox would only be displayed for the first 5 or so topics for any user, assuming that by that time the user knows the rules.
Stupid requests that don’t follow the rules should then be deleted by the moderators without further ado.
    Here’s an example from today:

    Hi Every Body
i have a problem which is related to Vcard file reader in CI. Please if any body have its solution. post that… i am waiting your relies.
