Firefox hates flash played through Shadowbox

    For some reason, Firefox won’t play movies displayed through a “shadowbox” on my client’s site. However, if the page displayed in the shadowbox is loaded on its own, it plays just fine.

    Shadowbox page displayed on its own

    Any thoughts on this?

    Not sure if this would solve it but have you tried setting the wmode to transparent?

    Alas yes, but with the same result.

    Here’s the code I’m using, which is embedded using {embed=""} into another template. I’ve tried it standalone with the same result, so it’s not because of the embed.

    <object classid="clsid:D27CDB6E-AE6D-11cf-96B8-444553540000" width="580" height="326" id="pointbreakPlayer">

                    <!--[if !IE]>-->
                    <object type="application/x-shockwave-flash" data="/flash/PointbreakPlayer.swf" width="580" height="326">

                    <!--<![endif]-->
                        <a href="http://www.adobe.com/go/getflashplayer">_                        <a href="http://www.adobe.com/images/shared/download_buttons/get_flash_player.gif">http://www.adobe.com/images/shared/download_buttons/get_flash_player.gif</a>_                    </a>
                    <!--[if !IE]>-->
                    </object>
                    <!--<![endif]-->
                </object>

    Hm..When I right click on it FF recognizes that it is flash. Could it be the path to the movie that is causing the issue?

    Hmm, don’t seem to be the problem. Using Firebug, it says that the movie is loading into the player, but the player won’t actually play it unless I refresh the window - then it works like a charm!
    And everything works fine in both Safari and Chrome.

    I just found this on the JW site.

    http://bit.ly/gRFDj3

    It looks like this might be a known bug for the JW player…

    Hmm, only problem is that I’m not using the JW Player.
    However, it might be possible that the Flash developer who built the player based it on the same technolgy as the JW one.
    I’ll definitely check this out! I’ll let you know how it went asap.

    Ah sorry. Not sure why I thought it was the JW player. My bad..

    No worries, thanks all the same.
    I found a couple of threads regarding similar issues, such as this one:
    http://www.longtailvideo.com/support/forums/jw-player/setup-issues-and-embedding/10148/flv-player-works-in-ie-but-not-in-firefox

    Seems it might have to do with the MIME-type. I’m looking into that with my server host as we speak (write).
    As you can see from the screen shot, the MIME-type sent does seem a bit off…

    Oh bummer…no luck. Firebug says that the MIME-type is indeed set to ‘video/f4v’, but the problem still occurs…

    Back to the drawing table.
