When I die what happens to the websites?

I manage a few websites for other people, if things go well then this number will continue to grow.  I am only a one man shop so I have been thinking that I have no equivalent of a “last will and testament” to indicate what should be done with the sites I manage in the event that some unexpected accident or injury or something happens.  For some of the more experienced designers/programmers.  What have you done (if anything) to prepare your clients for such unforseen events?

By the way, I am feeling very healthy and planning to be around for a long long time. 😉

I’m just curious what others have done?

I’m sure most hosting companies have protocols for deaths, as do the various domain registrars…

When you do die, I assume clients merely have to prove your death in order to get the password revealed/reset for them.

Of course, the average client probably wouldn’t know this…

When I die, the universe and everything in it—including the internet—will go with me. Solipsism FTW.

    Solipsism

good word, I didn’t know this one!

But seriously, judging by the number of views versus the number of replies, is it safe to say that most web designers/programmers don’t really care what happens?

I suppose I could put relevant information on a data card and/or printed materials and file it somewhere.  Safety deposit box?  But the nature of the beast is it is ever changing.

Does anyone have a solid plan or approach to this issue?

I have a batch file on my iPhone hooked up to a heart monitor that will run over a SSH tunnel to close all my web-sites.

Failing that, my next of kin will post a message letting people know, then hopefully not sell off my client’s details to the highest bidder. :p

My one concern is that everything degrades gracefully…
