I am planning to build a site using EE instead of waiting for EE2.

However I cannot choose between already established Vbulletin forum and switching to EE forum addon, depending on how EE2 changes the forum addon.

Will you release a new forum addon that requires a import process instead of a regular upload and overwrite update?

One thing to consider will be the differences between vBulletin and EE Forums. I put up an EE site a year before the EE Forums came out and was ready to go with vBulletin. Rick Ellis said it was a good choice, but if I waited awhile (a month) for the EE Forums I would not be disappointed. The EE Forums went up over three years ago and it’s been rock solid. There are differences in features between the two, of course, but none that seemed to matter to the forum members. Having full EE integration is a huge plus. On one forum install we run the EE Forums through the templates engine which adds all kinds of additional flexibility.

I agree with RonnieMC. I had been using vBulletin for a clients website for years. Once we started using EE we bought the Forum module and passed all of the members to that. The integration is flawless and very easy to setup. You only need to add the stand-alone login form to your site and that’s it.
Expression Engine Forums doesn’t have all of the features vBulletin, IP Board or PHPBB have, but that didn’t really change our decision. We wanted an integrated solution and the forum members didn’t mind having less features. Most members didn’t even use the bulk. The forum module is good enough for a normal community. It could use a bit of improvements on thread handling and such, but it’s not a huge drawback.

I’m thinking that the original posters question (a valid one) was overlooked or misunderstood. He’s asking whether a new version of the forum released as part of EE2 will require a data migration from the current EE forums, or will it be a straight upgrade? I think the answer is probably obvious - it would be crazy for a software company to release a new version of software that required an actual migration of data rather than simple db updates. However, I think it’s reasonable for EE staff to answer that question, even if its an obvious one.

I think you are right Ditchmonkey, I did misread the original question. The plan is to have 2.0 be as normal an upgrade as possible v. a migration and that would include 1st party Add-ons such as the Forums. Our goal is the standard “upload new files, run a db update script” process v. migrating data into a new db.
