Hi, I have installed the free version of ExpressionEngine and plan to upgrade to the paid version when 2.0 comes out, but so far I’ve been getting a lot of blog spam with ExpressionEngine.

I know that for Wordpress there is a plugin that will help you filter the spam, but what about ExpressionEngine? Is there any way to semi-automatically filter blog spam like in Wordpress?

It’s essentially impossible to prevent blog spam, but reducing it is rather easy.

1 - Use CAPTCHA. That slows down many spammers.

2 - Use the Advanced CAPTCHA. That slows down a few more.

3 - Use the Blacklist in .htaccess. That slows down a few more.

4 - Require users to Register before the can post comments. That really cuts down the spam.

5 - Set Moderation to “ON” which effectively prevents any spam from getting through.

What about a solution like http://akismet.com? I guess it doesn’t exist for Expression Engine.

Edit: I just found it is available for EE too.

P.S. Any idea if EE 2.0 is going to come out before next year?

Actually, it does.

Not used it but there is also Bad Behavior.

Hop Studios’ Defensio add-on works quite well too.

2.0 will be released when its done. Your best source of info is the EE Blog. We try to get new info on 2.0 out every 2-3 weeks.
