    Hi,
i need to create a custom field (actually 4 with the same info) that has a list of all my categories.
so far i have been unable to do so.

So, i thought i could create a drop down field in another field group and use that one to prepopulate my 4 fields. i did so, created a custom field, populated it with the list, and chose dropdown from the fields i need and chose the newly created one. but it didnt work. i get 2 entries on the drop down, and those are not what i typed in in the field anwyway.

i could create a dropdown and populate all the info per field, but then every time i add a new category i have to edit 4 fields. i thought that by prepopulating from another custom field at least i only have to edit one field when my categories change.

hope this makes sense, any ideas on how to do this?

    thanks

I think I’m having the exact same problem at the moment :

I manually populated 1 custom drop down field with the correct values.  Afterwards I created a new custom drop down field in a different field group and I tried to automatically populate it by referring to the first custom drop down field.
Now, when I go to the Publish window, the second drop down field does appear but doesn’t contain the values from the first drop down.

Did I (we) miss a step or is this not possible in EE ?

    Hey calford,

I found a solution for this one. In my example I wanted to populate 1 drop down list with the names of all the youth squads. Afterwards, newly created fields would refer to this one populated list so that I needed to update these fields only once.  We both found out that this is not working,  here is my solution :

    1) Make a new weblog, assign a new field group to it that contains the field “youth squad name”.
    2) Create new entries for this weblog,  each entry then contains the name of 1 youth squad
    3) Create the second field group,  containing a new drop down field.  This drop down field should then refer to the “youth squad name” field of the first weblog.

Whenever you make changes to the first weblog (add, delete or edit entries), these changes are reflected in the drop down list from the seconds field group.

    I hope this helps,

    Jan
