Multiple site manager - help on linking multiple domains

    Hi,

I have been following the tutorial for domainsetup (http://expressionengine.com/docs/cp/sites/domainsetup.html) but am having difficulty understanding the process.

I have 3 sites on one server e.g.:

    site1.com
    site2.com
    site3.com

I recently installed the module on site1.com. Could someone explain the process for linking ‘site2.com’ and site ‘site3.com’ to site1.com.

“Copy an existing Site’s path.php and index.php (the ones from your main directory, not from the system directory) files into the directory from which you wish to access your new Site.”

If I copy these into the new directory (site1.com) they will override the current path.php and index.php from site1.com?

Has anyone who has setup ‘multiple site manager’ on multiple domains please help me?

    Thanks,

    Jas

Who’s your host?  That may help with the details.  And- are you running Plesk or Cpanel as your server admin?

And to start- you had one site setup under your main domain- folders look like
    -system
    index.php
    path.php

So- you need to create a second domain.  Is that up and working?  And how did you do it- did you crate a folder for it and point to it.  So now- same place your were looking before you’re tree looks like
    -system
    -second_domain_folder
    index.php
    path.php

IF so- basically in the second_domain_folder- if you put an index.html saying ‘hello world’- does it show up when you load site2.com?  If so, should be good to get EE working there.  That’s where you put a copy of the path.php and index.php from the main site.  You’ll need to edit the path to the system folder in your path.php file and your site name as per docs, but that’s about it.

Well- assuming you’ve create the second site in EE and it has at least one template to show up.

Walk me through it- what have you done so far and where does it seem to be breaking?

hey Robin Sowell, thanks so much for your reply 😊 .

We have our own dedicated servers and have also setup our own vhosts to treat each directory as a seperate domain. The directory structures look like the below:

    /dir

    /dir/site1     (site1.com)
    /dir/site1/index.php
    /dir/site1/path.php
    /dir/site1/system

    /dir/site2     (site2.com)
    /dir/site2/index.php
    /dir/site2/path.php
    /dir/site2/system

    /dir/site3     (site3.com)
    /dir/site3/index.php
    /dir/site3/path.php
    /dir/site3/system

site1 has the multiple site manager. Is there anyway multiple site manager could link to site2 and site 3 from the above structure or would we have to go through and rearrange everything as you had mentioned in your previous message?

    Thanks,

    Jas

Jas, it is much easier to set up your sites the way Robin mentioned earlier.

You only need one system directory, the one from the original site. Your second and third sites would be at the same level as your system directory.

I’ve got a question about: One system folder instead of a system folder on each domain.

My host Hostgator says it’s not possible to set a path from one domain to another, even if they both are on the same server, because, and I quote: It will be trying to pull information from another account, which is disabled in our PHPSuexec/SuPHP environment.

But if this is not possible then there is no use for the multiple site manager because in this case it would be the same as running separate EE on every domain, right? Can you tell me if this is true and what i can do to set a path from one domain to another.

And can you explane why it is so important to have one system folder instead of separate system folders on each domain?

    Thanks,

    Menno

I use MSM successfully on sites using cPanel. I’m not sure how HostGator does their setups.

What I use in cPanel is to create what is called an addon domain. It’s basically a subdirectory off of the primary domain which has been mapped to a new domain name.

You may need to ask if they have that sort of functionality.
