mod edit:  split from this thread

I’m having this same issue.  I was on 1.6.3, and the random logout was hitting me on the backend.  I upgraded to 1.6.5 today, and it’s still happening.  In fact, I had to clear cookies to even login at all—the cp page just refreshed, no matter what I entered.  I can login briefly, but then it kicks me out.

And after a few login attempts, it goes back to the “refresh without logging in at all” issue.

What’s worse, I cannot logout now on the frontend—every time I do, it says I’m logged out and then it redirects and I’m still logged in.  That is new to the 1.6.5 upgrade.

Also, my forum is apparently counting all my login attempts as anonymous users—I show 5 users logged in, but no one has logged in but me, so there’s something rotten in the state of Denmark to be sure.

Clearing cookies will log me out of everything.

My cp options are cookies and session for the control panel, and cookies only for the user session type.  I’m on enginehosting, so things should be working correctly, right?

I have MSM installed (part of todays upgrades) and turned on, but I’ve not actually created any new sites yet.  But the random logout happened before I got the MSM, too.

Suggestions?  Running Safari 3.1.2 on Tiger,  but this has happened on a windows box on firefox too.

Check your settings in CP Home ›  Admin ›  System Preferences ›  Cookie Settings

Try settings your cookie domain to:  .yourdomainname.com note the “.” on the front.

Hmm.  No worky for me—I still get random logouts, though it’s a bit less often now.

As a side note, is the fast reply working on these boards?  When I try it, it sends me to the post reply screen most times instead of adding my post.

Yes, fast reply works fine, I use it most of the time. Are you using cookies exclusively, or sessions ids as well? You also might try to turn off secure forms, see if that changes anything.

Tried that, Ingmar.  Didn’t work either.  Firefox and Safari both logout randomly after about 30 or so seconds—or up to a couple of minutes.  No idea why.  Doesn’t matter what combination of cookies and sessions I’m using, either—happens all the time.

ETA:  This is TRULY annoying—I bought MSM and installed it and I can’t add a new site!  Every time I try to click on the submit button on the create a new site page I am logged out and the changes are not saved.  I simply cannot do any work in my control panel.

Not a browser specific or platform issue.  Could this be a host issue?  Or an ISP?  My business partner’s xp machine has the same problems.  We are on the same ISP, but hosted on Enginehosting.  This has been happening for weeks now, but I’ve not had to update my control panel much.  Now, with trying to develop a site, this is just immensely frustrating.

    Greetings Vanceone!

I feel your frustration and I’m splitting your thread off of the other one so things don’t get jumbled up and we make sure to focus on the issues you are having.

When you say this happens “all the time,” how long has this been going on?  I understand in your experience it is not browser/platform related, but do you see the same behavior regardless of ISPs?

    Thanks!

Thanks for the split.  This is somewhat baffling—I think it’s an ISP issue.

I’ll recap the history.  I’ve run a personal install of EE for over a year now.  When we started investigating starting our own business, I first ran into this issue back in July or so at my business partner’s apartment on her XP firefox version, but nowhere else.  Now that we’ve started our business, and through all the upgrades to commercial, etc, I’ve run into this problem at her apartment on her computer, on mine, regardless of browser.  Today, I’m at a public library hotspot, and it works fine.  So clearly, her ISP is at fault.  DSL, so I’m not quite sure what could be causing this consistent drop.  She’s changing ISP’s soon, so hopefully this problem will go away.

Still, it seems a bit worrisome that an ISP issue of whatever kind can cause this consistent logout.  They weren’t the greatest service, but it caused me to think there is something wrong with EE.  It also caused me to go to the post reply screen almost every time I tried to use a fast reply, and not after any forum timeout—sometimes within a minute of opening a thread page.  So there was something screwy there, but I haven’t any idea what the service could be doing that is causing EE to go haywire so much.

It could be your IP address from your ISP is changing really, really quickly.  The IP you log in with is a security check in EE (and CI) sessions to make sure you are who you are.  If you go to a site such as whatismyip.com take note of the IP address you are on, wait a minute & reload the page, does it change?

I ran into this with my ISP earlier this week, and it ended up being some things that were misconfigured on their end and they got it fixed for me.

I’d give that a looksey, as that very well could be the problem.
