So now what? We pay 10 times competitive price for hosting with slicehost?? :D

Rackspace is great, I mean you really do pay (over?) for what you get, but man. I’ll take lube please.

There are things that make you want to heave, and there are things you love.  Imagine, something you love takes on the identity of something that makes you want to heave.  That’s what is happening here.  Slicehost is turning into Mosso.  Granted, it will be a different Mosso service, but the original Mosso service is crap.  Perhaps Mosso will now have a strong area, but I’m skeptical.

    For those who care ...

How do you rate slicehost’s customer service and its server? My hosting is about to expire in few days with another company and looking for a better one.

I’d give them 10/10, but I’ve only had to contact support once for something very trivial.  I’ve had no major problems.  The setup process is a breeze and takes almost no time at all.

Thanks. But it says there is no cpanel, plesk and also have to register domain with different provider. How do you find to work on it with out control panels like cpanel. As i have always used cpanel. I’m bit unsure about these things. And, does slice means RAM? As i don’t know linux commands, is it necessary to learn it, as from FAQ looks like you have to.

It sounds like Slicehost might not be for you unless you’re open for a challenge.

There are no preinstalled control panels - that is correct.  I’m sure you could install something, but I do everything I need to (administration, configuration, etc) through SSH (yes, Linux command line stuff, herein lies the challenge if you’re not already up to par).

The “Slice” simply means the particular plan, all of which are listed directly on their front page.  If you were to register and purchase 1 account, you would have a “slice”.

I would recommend slicehost, but only if you’re willing to learn linux. This is because you need to setup Apache, PHP, MySQL etc. Other than that it is a great service, setup of the VPS is very fast and it’s slice CP is easy to use for adding domains etc.

I’d read some of the guides before purchasing, to see if you’d be able to do what it says to get it up and running. If you do choose to buy, I have webmin installed on my slice, it makes things much easier to do. But can still use SSH if I need to.

And back on topic of slicehost being acquired by rackspace. I thought this would’ve been a good thing, but after reading some of the views on this thread, maybe not so…

Rackspace really have been brilliant at customer service… ‘fanatical support’ is one of their trademarks.
However, they’ve always traditionally been offering very expensive enterprise solutions.
Now with slicehost and mosso, they’re really starting to branch out. Which, I’m not too sure is a great idea.

Why dilute such a strong and specific brand?
It’s not as though they were struggling to make money with their managed servers!

lol there prices.  Used 3tb last month, and I only pay 159 a month. Not 800 or 1000.
Maby they should fire all support in these companies? So the can offer cheaper servers. The one I’m with they have no support they just give you a box, and you pay it every month.
    Mine is a

    AMD Athlon 64 dual-core
    2GB RAM
    400GB HD
100Mbit port - full duplex Unmetered transfer (35TB a month max)
    $159 a month.

    Works for me.

Rackspace has had Mosso for quite some time, though in the beginning there may have been a looser coupling.  I believe Mosso was started by some Rackspace employees who wanted to create a new type of hosting service.  They started this service on Rackspace’s servers with the blessing of Rackspace but I’m not sure they were actually part of Rackspace at that time.

Mosso actually hit the scene sometime before MediaTemple launched their grid hosting service.  This kind of put the idea of cloud hosting for the masses into the spotlight and Mosso gained more exposure as an alternative to MT.  Unfortunately, both services sucked right out of the gate.  I checked them out back in the early days and they had a lot of bad reviews on Web Hosting Talk.

This is my main issue with the Slicehost news.  They are basically becoming Mosso though as a different service.  It appears that Slicehost will continue to exist though.  I have no experience with Rackspace, I’m sure they are great.  But I have heard little good about Mosso.

Most of this is probably wrong, but I have been watching Mosso for quite some time.

I’ve used slicehost, no major issues. Can anyone compare them to Linode?
