Hi all, not sure if this should be installation or technical support, but either way, i have an issue with the forums on a site, after moving it from one server to another. I haven’t had too much to do with Expression Engine for a while now, so I am a bit rusty, butalso it is making it difficult for me to work out what the problem is.

The site in question is http://www.stawa.net, the forums are http://www.stawa.net/index.php/forums which is the page that totally gives the errors.. I have had a look at the theme files, and they are in place, and i have also gone into the admin and checked to see that the templates are there and they are.

Is the issue to do with physical files, or is there some other reason behind this?

Any help would be very much appreciated

    Thanks

    Patrick

Patrick- you using php in those forum templates and pulling in headers etc/ with it?  Looks like that’s what’s up.  Trying to do an include using a full url, and the server won’t allow it.

Try putting up a stock theme real quick as a test- and make it your default them.  Let’s see if that pulls up.

hmm, not sure I understand what you mean… I have just changed the theme from default to grey, and tried it again but the same issue exists.. I dont think im using php to pull the headers etc that I know of… If I was, changing the theme to grey would have resolved the issue wouldn’t it?

I should have pasted the error I was seeing.  On the plus side, I’m not seeing it now- the grey theme is coming up fine.  Did you tweak something, or does it still look off to you?

Yep- still coming up.  Try logging out- perhaps it’s tied to that in some way.

Hm- well, it gives us a hint, anyway.  Are you running the forum through regular templates?  And I swear I saw an error once.  Are you seeing any errors logged in as superadmin?  If so- post them.

ahh, i did a bit more digging, and found out that there was a php include in the template, where I was trying to include the navigation from the main site. This worked on the last hosting, but obviously this new hosting only accepts the full path of a file for includes, which is why it caused the error… is it possible to include a part of the main site into the forums? Basically it is a codeblock which has the navigation in it, which would save having to update the nav twice each time

    Patrick:

To include dynamic elements like this, you can run your forum through the regular template parser.  See this page in the docs for more information.

The additional overhead is really up to you.  The more template embeds or exp weblog entries tags you add will add more to the template parsing and thus the additional overhead.

    Make sense?

I think you could do the php include with a full path instead of a url- but don’t quote me on that one.  Putting it in a template is only going to be as heavy as you make it, so for just a simple embed shouldn’t be a killer.

But if you do run into another issue with it, start a new thread and we’ll dig in.
