Can I blame code igniter for this

I can satisfactorily say that 2 weeks since starting with code igniter, it has made php script writing more fun but it has also made me lazier.

When I look at some of my earlier code, I feel a very angry that the code igniter classes and helpers are not available to make my work easier. This is especially true for the database class.

I’ve been able to “de-codeigniterfy” the html, url & text helpers to ease my pain, but then I another sad realization hits me. “I am trying to put make-up on an old ugly beast”, that is, using the helpers does not yield the desired satisfaction if the underlying program structure is messed up.

Anyway, given that I am a relatively new php programmer, I know my small personal scripts that I have written this far cannot bring about as sad a realization as for those who discovered MVC-codeigniter with way bigger and uglier code under their belts.

loosetops you are looser as your name says and not CodeIgniter. You don’t know how to manage codes in CI.

Go and learn. Stop playing these Blame Games.

    Hey Yash,
Perhaps you didn’t realize that the title was a tongue in cheek. It is probably due to my failure to articulate my murky feelings about learning codeigniter and trying to reconcile my past work with some touch from codeigniter.

It really isn’t a blame game, it is just one mans coming to terms with the notion that his previous work was very inelegant given his current knowledge.

Sorry about Yash, seems although most of this community is friendly and helpful, some are still a little immature. 🙄

I know exactly what you mean about programming after getting heavily used to CI. I have the luck of coding in PHP for several years before I got into CI, so going back was not as difficult as for those who began here. I moved to a 9-5 where we use large legacy systems with plain PHP and a mental architecture that cant really be described with abbreviations.

All I can suggest is try to structure future code in a slightly more MVC way. Failing that, use your “de-codeigniterfied” helpers to make your life a little easier and you code a little cleaner, and next time you consider a re-code you are already half way there

    Hey loosetops -

First off, welcome to the community!

If you’d like, you can join my efforts against filing a lawsuit against Ellis Labs for not mentioning that using CI contributes to excessive weight gain (here’s the post).

    Welcome and enjoy yourself!

Welcome loosetops, I’m sure you won’t be put off by childish remarks. Its a fantastic community really. As with anything, the bigger the community gets, the broader the age range, and mentality.

Welcome loosetops, this is a fantastic community as pickledegg2 says, but beware, CodeIgniter is addictive and should come with a medical warning.
