I’m now optimizing my EE site, using the suggestions in the Optimize EE wiki article.

Among other tings, I’m adding tag caching to my weblog:entries tags. What time interval do you recommend for weblog entries that might only change once each week or twice each month? How high should I go, given that all the other areas on the pages will remain the same?

Thanks for your advice on this!

In that case, I’d just use template caching, Ceil.  Simpler to keep track of and it sounds like these are pages that will overall not be changing very often.

I was thinking about that, since I have that enabled for all my static pages.

How much time do you recommend I define for the refresh interval for the template caching? Is 60 minutes okay for all of them (static pages, plus those that are only updated once a week at the most? maybe a slightly shorter interval for those that are updated each week?)?

Whatever time frame you define as content being “stale” is a good choice, and of course the longer that period is, the less database and disk i/o you will have.  Of course, if you want caches to stick closely to these defined intervals, you’ll want to make sure you have “Clear all caches when new entries are posted?” disabled in your global weblog preferences.  This setting makes ExpressionEngine clear all of its caches when you publish an entry, forcing new cache files to be written system-wide.  This strikes the right balance for most users of having some form of caching, but still have content published immediately available on the site.  It sounds, though, that you are more concerned with caching than having a 100% dynamic site, and if that’s the case, longer cache times with that setting disabled would be the way to go.
