As far as I can see, everybody here seems to be pretty dang civil. They all write in clear & concise English with proper punctuation and grammar. Communities ARE capable of such a thing.

However, online forums are widely known as being giant flame fests and spam marathons. You go into ANY forum for an online game, and there are people crying “n00b” and spending up all their time trying to “stick it to the other guy.. over the internet? *shrug*”. This is especially the case in MySpace groups.

I’m just proud of how mature (and intelligent) the developer community is. I know that not everyone could do what we do. And everyone has their learning curve for programming. Some become super elite, and some people just can’t comprehend it all (like the people who developed vista 😛).

    These days, nerds are cool.
I’m proud to be a nerd!!

I think you’ll come to find that there is sniping that goes on in some threads, but for the most part this is a pretty civil community to belong to.

Exactly. This community (and EE) tend to attract very inteligent people.

Even in the occasional debate that goes on here, (most times) views are respected, even if they are being rebuttled and debated.

The maturity is unmatched anywhere else IMO; that is, of course, at least where I have been.

I think it’s a difference in audience and a difference in attitude. The audience here tends to be the kind of people who enjoy mucking about with code, and creating code is usually a cooperative process so there’s little to be gained by belittling one’s potential comrades. There’s an attitude here—and in other coding-centric forums—that’s very keenly focused on problem-solving, where the only ‘opponent’ is a complex mental challenge. Because there’s no competition, really, there isn’t a reason to be competitive.

Back when I was really interested in modding Unreal Tournament, the UnrealWiki had a very similar vibe. Several of the programming-centric mailing lists I watch are also usually very civil and intellectual. This leads me to believe that it’s primarily a symptom of the discussion topic rather than the supposed intellectual superiority of the contributors here.

Forums are nothing more than a community and a community is only as good as the people within. That’s the start of a community.

Now, a community gets better as the people within that community make it better - which is a direct relation to that person’s motivation for belonging to that community.

Just like you want nice schools and a park in your neighborhood and you are willing to volunteer hours or pay an extra % on taxes; the CodeIgniter community loves this framework and wants to become more proficient in using it, decreasing the amount of time we spend on monotonous tasks, increasing the security and reliability of our application and in general, make our lives simpler and more enjoyable.

Therefore, we volunteer the hours and pay that little bit up-front (either in real money with blogs, promotional materials, etc) or in blood, sweat and tears. We have an emotional, and sometimes economical, stake in this community’s success.

    Huzzah. Well said!

A community is made by it’s users, however, different communities attract different users. A CS clan forum will attract n00b crieers, the CI forums attract more intelligent, (often more mature) people. And the so often lazy bastard that just wants us to write his code without a proper please or thanks.

    NOOB!

On topic: The professionalism on this board is one of the reasons I stayed here in the first place.  Michael hit the nail on the head, the people here have time and money invested in this and care about the framework.

Haha I’ve seen so much of this in the last decade of programming. Remember how many people wanted you to write them a VB6 program 😛
