I’m installing EE and would ultimately like to bridge user accounts to existing Invision Power Board and 4images databases (most probably via aMember Pro).

With that scenario in mind, should I choose MD5 or SHA1 encryption? Or is it possible to change this setting during a later stage?

I’m aware that SHA1 offers much better encryption, but offering one centralized user account is very important.

I don’t know how those systems encrypt their passwords or if that would matter as for as a cross-authentication system.  Personally, without other considerations, I would recommend SHA1 for ExpressionEngine for the reasons you state.

And no, you can not change later.
