I’m trying to decide whether it’s best to renew my account now or wait until ee2.0 is released in a few months. Before I decide however, I want to make sure all my facts are correct… So basically if I renew my account now, I’ll have access to the 1.6.x branch for one full year there after. Later when 2.0 is released, I’ll have an option to upgrade my account (at a discounted fee compared to others who are upgrading from an expired license), and will have access to the 2.0 branch for a full year as well. Is this correct, or have I misinterpreted something?

Almost. An ExpressionEngine license never expires. Its yours for life. What expires is a license’s Download Account which allows a person to update to the latest version they own (1.x, 2.x, etc…).

If you renew the Download Account it will allow you to update to the latest version of 1.x. If you decide to upgrade the license to 2.x, any remaining time on the Download Account will be automatically applied to 2.x upgrades as well.
