I am tossing around the idea of building a method to which a user can sign up for alerts based upon a keyword stored in a weblog custom field.  The idea is if they keyword is matched it will alert the user of the new article and send them a link.  I have no clue how to actually accomplish this so I thought I’d ask on the forum.  Does this flow make sense below? If so, is there any exisiting EE components to manage this process?

1.) Create a weblog custom field
2.) Users add a alert reminder and key in a search term
3.) A daily/weekly cron job runs to check what has been added
4.) If any keyword matches, it will generate an e-mail with a link to the article to the user.

I don’t know about in an email.  But how about in RSS? Create an RSS Feed using the search: parameter and the keyword in a certain segment.  Then call it like:

    search:body="{segment_3}"

then any entries with that keyword in the body field will show up in the RSS feed; this will effectively alert your users.  You could, if you need to, u se a service to convert RSS to email to get to the email portion of your request.

... and moved to How To. =)
